Textiles add soulfulness, warmth and style to any interior. Hand-sewn chair covers are a prime example of this. Made by the hands of the mistress of the house, they speak of her homeliness, creative spirit, love for her home and her loved ones, and the desire to make their life cozy and stylish.

Species

Furniture covers may vary in quality of material, product shape, size and color scheme.

Not every material is suitable for an everyday case. The fabric for the future product should be of good quality, wear-resistant, pleasant to the touch, and most importantly, pleasing to the eye. This is especially true for covers on dining chairs with backrests. Textiles in the kitchen area tend to get dirty quickly, so fabric products will need to be washed frequently.

For everyday covers, you should not use allergenic fabrics such as wool and viscose.

If there is at least one person in the house who is prone to allergies, you need to make sure that no objects create discomfort for him. Another disadvantage of wool is its warming ability, which is not required for covers, especially in the spring and summer.

Among the options for the most current fabric for sewing covers, the following can be noted:

Cotton. Inexpensive and hypoallergenic cotton fabrics are durable and wash well. The disadvantages include instant wetness. The colors on these materials quickly fade in the sun.

Linen fabrics extremely durable, suitable for many years of use without loss of quality. Linen products will always be relevant for kitchen interiors different styles, especially for rustic country and gentle Provence. The slightly rough texture is difficult to paint and is difficult to wash and iron.

Crepe satin and gabardine– the most successful materials for chair covers. Elegant variations of fabrics that provide an elegant appearance to future products, have good elasticity and density, and are easy to wash and clean.

Supplex/Lycra– elastic fabrics that stretch perfectly in all directions. Based on their combination of qualities, they are suitable for any furniture covers: durable, waterproof, and easy to clean.

Dimensions

In order to correctly cut out a future furniture cover, in any case you will need the dimensions of a chair or stool. This is especially true for fabric products that completely fit the furniture. Knowing the exact measurements, you can sew a textile accessory of any possible configuration. A simple tailor's "centimeter" is suitable for taking measurements.

You can draw a smaller version of the product on a piece of paper and apply the size after each measurement to avoid confusion.

For a chair with a rectangular back, you will need the following dimensions:

    back height;

    seat depth;

    chair width;

    height of legs;

the height of the chair itself from the top edge of the back to the floor.

Color

In order for harmony to reign in the interior, the color scheme of the chair covers must necessarily echo the shade of the curtains and tablecloths in the kitchen. Delicate pastel shades are preferred. A universal option is white or beige material, but in a kitchen or dining room it will be too soiled and will have to be washed often. The style of the room is also important. The cover for a chair or stool can be dark brown or black, if this is relevant in this context.

Material consumption

To sew a standard universal chair cover, you will need some fabric. For one product, 1.5-2 meters is enough. A half-case requires even less. If you need a regular cushion for a stool, calculate the dimensions of the seat and double the amount of material. For fastening ties, the amount of fabric does not need to be taken into account; they are usually ribbons.

Types

To determine the variation of a product, you need to consider each of its types.

Universal cases resemble appearance a cape whose width is adjustable. The fixing laces are located at the back of the chair. The products do not have armrests, so they are suitable for different styles of chairs. Brooches can serve as additional decoration, satin ribbons, rhinestones, lurex thread. Some craftsmen use lightning. Most often they are located on the side for secure fixation.

There are also universal models for stools. Moreover, their length can vary; in this case, the “skirt” does not cover the entire length of the chair, but only a separate part of it. Such models of covers are called shortened - they usually cover 2/3 of the stool.

Luxury products stand out from their “colleagues”. For such specimens, only expensive materials are used, which are distinguished by spectacular folds and all kinds of decorations. Fresh flowers, rich drapery, rhinestone threads, and crystals are used as decorative elements. One more distinguishing feature– ruffles along the edge of the seat, which give the product a graceful look. The models are used mainly in expensive restaurants for weddings, banquets and other special occasions.

Semi-covers are another type of kitchen accessories. Products are most often sewn with an elastic band that covers the chair, or with ribbons that are tied to it. Such methods of fixation prevent the cover from slipping.

The cover can be sewn only on the seat or cover only the back of the chair. Or the product (one-piece or separate) can completely cover both the seat and the back.

How to take measurements and make a pattern?

The initial stage of sewing a cover is creating a pattern. It completely depends on the design of the furniture product.

It is necessary to take a material that takes its shape well and cover the chair with it, securing it with pins in the right places. At this stage, you need to decide what the cover will be like, how long the legs will be covered, and whether a fastener is needed at the back.

Measurements for the cover can be taken using tracing paper. Let's give an example for a simple product with a back and a fold at the back.

A layer of paper is applied to the seat, secured with tailor's needles and traced along the contour. Add a 1.5 cm allowance on all sides and cut out the part. Measure the back of the chair in the same way.

For the front “skirt” of the cover, measure the length of the chair legs and the width of the front edge. Draw a rectangle on a sheet of tracing paper and add 5 cm to the bottom of the pattern and 10 cm to the sides, plus 1.5 cm seam allowance along the top edge.

The pattern for the sides of the “skirt” is made in the same way. Add 15 cm to the edge adjacent to the outer back piece. The pattern is made in duplicate.

To measure the outer part of the back, apply a long sheet of tracing paper to the top edge of the back of the chair, marking the outer edges. Lines are drawn along the back legs of the chair to the floor, adding 5 cm at the bottom and 1.5 cm for the allowance. The centers are marked at the bottom and top of the pattern, then folded along them and the fabric is cut into two even parts.

How simpler product, the fewer measurements are needed. For a simple seat, you only need to measure the depth and width of the seat.

Design

One of the most common ways to diversify the interior is to use unusual textile elements. The design of textile products directly depends on their purpose in the interior and the theme of the space.

Interesting ideas for decorating a high chair cover will help decorate a child's room. The back of the chair with the image of a funny animal or favorite cartoon character will please any child. You can create a similar design for a children's high chair using applique.

To create a festive atmosphere in the house, you can decorate furniture covers in a festive manner. In the summer, fresh flowers and compositions made from them can serve as decorative elements. For a wedding or birthday celebration, you can choose transparent flowing fabrics decorated with lurex and rhinestones. For a winter celebration, you can afford New Year's paraphernalia: a scarlet case with a cap like Santa Claus, decorative elements in the form of gilded cones and fir branches.

The cover can not only be sewn, but also knitted or crocheted. This product looks very cozy and homey.

Seat

The seat cover is the most popular textile product for the kitchen. This type of cover can be used both on a bar stool and on a simple stool. Its production does not require large material costs, and even a teenager can cope with it.

There are several options for making a seat with your own hands:

The easiest way is to sew an accessory from two halves of fabric. A pattern is made from cardboard or tracing paper based on the shape of the chair seat. Transfer the pattern to the fabric and padding polyester, sew it together and apply decorative stitching in a diamond pattern. The edges of the product can be trimmed with trim.

  • For those who know how to knit, it will not be difficult to make a unique hand-made product for the kitchen. It is better to choose bright, large yarn as a material. Specimens knitted from small volumetric parts - cones from several columns - look attractive.
  • Another interesting way– a seat made using the “biscuit” technique, which consists of many soft small pillows sewn together into one fabric.

Functionality

Like any thing, covers have their purpose.

Thanks to them, you can solve several problems simultaneously:

Fabric products protect new furniture well from dirt and mechanical damage, and the soft upholstery of chairs from scuffs. The ability to wash the removable cover when dirty is one of the advantages of a woven product. In addition, the covers protect furniture and upholstery from the sharp claws of pets.

Perform an aesthetic function. Covers can radically transform old furniture and breathe new life into it. new life. Sewing a cover yourself or purchasing a ready-made one is much easier than buying new furniture or completely reupholstering chairs.

Unpresentable plastic chairs in the country can be decorated with spectacular drapery made of suitable material.

On special occasions, covers are worn to decorate the interior; they help create a special holiday atmosphere.

Style

Chair covers can suit any interior style. For example, simple cotton fabrics with fine floral pattern appropriate for French Provence.

Striped mother-of-pearl materials will suit a classic English room. Denim denim can become great solution modern interior. Rough, undyed linen is relevant for a rustic style.

Will look great in rustic country style knitted covers on the chairs. You can use homemade rugs, which are very fashionable now, from strips of old knitwear. Strict satin products are appropriate for any classic interior.

Sewing universal products

The production of universal models does not imply complex pattern, taking measurements and creating a template on paper is carried out according to a standard scheme.

Let's look at sewing a cover using the example of a product with a back and a fold at the back step by step:

  1. The pattern is transferred to the fabric, always taking into account the position of the grain thread. You can draw on fabric using chalk, a thin piece of soap or a pencil.
  2. After cutting, they proceed to sewing the product. First they grind side seams backrests
  3. Next, we fold and sew the bottom and side sections of the back of the back.
  4. At this point, you can sew the zipper into the fold at the back of the garment. After this, we grind down the upper edge of the back of the chair.
  5. We sew together all the parts of the “skirt”. We turn its bottom edge and stitch it.
  6. We sew down the seat of the cover and the upper edge of the “skirt”.
  7. We connect the back and other parts together.
  8. At the final stage, you need to overcast the internal seams and cuts. If this is not possible, you can do it manually with an overcast stitch.
  9. If the zipper was not sewn in, you need to sew decorative loops and buttons into the fold at the back of the product.

For the kitchen

The kitchen is one of the most favorite rooms in the house, where the whole family gathers every day for intimate conversations and delicious food.

A cover for a high chair is a truly irreplaceable and necessary thing. In our article you will learn a lot interesting facts about covers for a high chair, and also learn about where such covers are, in addition to traditional options, can be found quickly.

Peculiarities

When buying a high chair, many parents forget to buy a cover for it, but in vain. Here are a few reasons for this need, why everything will become clear:

  • The process of feeding a baby- it's a troublesome matter. The toddler does not always eat carefully. Food can end up anywhere, including on the high chair and on the baby himself. And so that the young mother does not have to clean up for a particularly long time, they use a cover for the high chair, which, if necessary, can be removed and washed. After all, it’s much easier than washing the entire chair.

Manufacturers often sell nursing furniture with covers made of oilcloth material. This option is quite practical; it does not need to be washed, and when it gets dirty, it is enough to wipe it with a cloth. There is a significant saving in cleaning time.

However, the baby's back will constantly sweat, and you may develop an allergy or rash. Then you will have to put additional fabric on the back of the high chair, which is not entirely convenient for every meal.

  • Convenience. The cover also serves the baby well. After all, he feels comfortable and does not move out of his chair. Moreover, the additional lining softens the blows and bruises of the fidget.
  • An aesthetic question. The presence of a beautiful cover will bring additional color and good mood to the kitchen.

Of course, the question also arises of whether it is possible to replace the cover with something more affordable, for example, a piece of fabric or a diaper.

This is not entirely convenient, since when using this option the material will constantly slide and get wet.

Materials

Let's briefly talk about which fabrics can be used in the production of removable material for a high chair, and which are best ignored:

Woolen, wool blend, viscose, velvet, velor

All these options immediately disappear. There are several reasons and they are very significant:

  • Allergenicity of materials.
  • Heating effect.
  • They do not wash out and are difficult to clean.

Cotton

This option has a number of significant advantages:

  • Hypoallergenic.
  • Long term services.
  • Easy to use.

Negative points:

  • Get wet quickly.
  • Fading of paint due to washing and constant exposure to bright light.

Flax

Positive qualities:

  • Strength.
  • Self-cleaning.

Flaws:

  • Difficulty ironing and washing.
  • Rough fabric texture.

Cotton fabrics include sateen, twill, canvas, denim, gabardine.

Silk

Some silk materials (crepe satin, silk gabardine) hardly get dirty or wet, are easy to wash and can be cleaned. Satin gets dirty easily, so you will have to clean this material quite often. All these fabrics are quite slippery - they will constantly slide off when fidgeting in a chair. Brocade cannot be washed; it cannot be ironed and is difficult to clean.

Biflex

Positive features of the material:

  • Practically does not get wet.
  • Wear resistance.
  • Easy care.
  • Stretches well.

Flock and microfiber

Of the positive criteria for these materials, only two can be identified:

  • Appearance for a long time remains the same due to the lint pulling in dirt particles.
  • Long service life.

Cons: cannot be washed, and only flock can be cleaned.

  • Payment for the order can be made by any in an accessible way: online payment, cash payment upon receipt, payment by card upon receipt.
  • Alternative choice. You can always find suitable model cover specifically for your high chair.
  • Refusal to purchase if the item, for example, did not fit during delivery. You won't lose anything in this case. But not all online stores are inclined to this approach.

  • Delivery to your apartment or pickup from a collection point in your city.
  • Possibility of receiving a discount for subscribing or ordering additional products.
  • Some online stores provide daily, weekly, seasonal or narrowly targeted (for one type of product) discounts via email.
  • No one will impose additional goods and services.

Disadvantages of such a purchase:

  • Additional costs. You will need to pay extra for delivery. However, there are online stores that allow you to save on shipping when paying for additional items or make this item free.
  • Lack of opportunity to evaluate the product visually, to touch it with your hands.
  • Risks associated with defects and defects.
  • Short warranty period or no warranty. Indeed, when ordering through online services, you will encounter this problem, so before purchasing the same case, carefully read the site rules.

Buying from a regular store

Purchasing goods this way has a number of positive aspects:

  • Convenience.
  • The opportunity to evaluate the product in person.
  • Quality products.
  • Discounts and promotions.
  • Checking the documentation for the product from the seller.

Among the minuses, it is worth noting the following criteria:

  1. Intrusiveness of additional services and goods.
  2. Small selection. The required cover for the high chair is not always available.

Service center or specialized store

Order from an atelier or sewing workshop

In this case, a good option would be to tailor a cover to order. Distinctive Features such choices are:

  • You can choose your own fabric component, model range and color.
  • Your wishes will be taken into account by the contractor.
  • Sewing process control.

Among the disadvantages of this approach, the following points should be noted:

  • You need to wait a long time for the result.
  • Unpredictability of the tailoring outcome.
  • High cost.

Color texture

In addition to the traditional colors of covers, parents are increasingly choosing the brightest and most glamorous colors. Below are some of the most popular shades of fabric covers:

  • Orange. An interesting combination option is the color scheme of the orange case and gray shade chair. Observant parents will notice that together these color colors create the impression that they are looking at a bright carrot.
  • Turquoise. A rich shade that is especially popular for boys.
  • Ultramarine. There are not enough words to describe all the beauty that this color of the case will give.
  • With a drawing. There is nothing funnier and more attractive than an interesting drawing of cartoon characters on a children's chair. This will not only cheer up the baby, but can also serve as an interesting game for him while feeding with his mother.
  • Violet. Both girls and boys really like it.

  • Pay attention to the material with which the cover is made. It must be made from natural ingredients. Ideally, a universal option: the inner part is polyester, and the outer part is cotton.
  • Filler. Typically, the internal component of the covers is foam rubber or padding polyester. The second option is preferable because it doesn’t bulge when washed and keeps its shape.
  • Color factor. For small children, it is better to give preference to pastel colors: pale pink or beige are ideal.
  • Functional. The presence of seat belts guarantees your child reliable protection from slipping while eating.

To learn how to sew a cover for a high chair with your own hands, see the following video.

It's no secret that one of the usual and necessary children's accessories is a high chair.

Each chair is a rigid frame with a soft cover on top.
The variety of models is very large. It is easy to find a detailed dossier for each item on the Internet.

I, for my part, like mom - experienced I have already chosen several favorites that have proven themselves to be excellent.
The main thing is that the unit should be:
-stable,
-compact, easy to fold,
-there was a large removable table with sides,
The rest is “bows”.

It is better to give preference to plastic products. When iron parts are present, they rust over time. it won't lead to anything good. Of course, it’s enough for one child, but if you plan to use the chair for eating in the future, or pass it on to friends/by inheritance, it’s better to refuse such a candidate.

If frame parts break (this happens extremely rarely), you can order them from official dealers or purchase the same model for spare parts.
Plastic chairs are easy to care for and last a very long time. Often, several generations grow up on one such throne, while nothing happens to it itself, only the plastic may fade slightly. And that’s only for Chinese companies. If we consider expensive well-known brands, a period of 15 years is just the beginning for most.
Therefore, many parents are in no hurry to fork out money for new special seats, but take them from friends or buy second-hand ones through advertisements (Avito, Yula, forums.). In this case, you can save a decent amount of money, but you need to be prepared to replace the cover (reasons are discussed below) - this is a smaller fraction of the cost of a new chair.

We've sorted out the fundamental support of the chair, now let's talk about its upholstery.

How do you think: -" Can the soft cover last as long as the seat itself? »
Unfortunately no…
The cover is enough for a maximum of 1-2 children.

What happens to them?
They:
- crack,

- crumble,

- torn,

-absorbs odors of food and secretions,

- “innards” come out through the holes,

- scratch/stick to the body...

This is not because he was initially bad. Just like many things, they have their own service life. Even in luxury brands, eco-leather begins to creep and crumble over time - and everything that flies off sticks to the body of the owner of the throne. And where the oilcloth cracks at the fold, it begins to scratch the baby.

When the material has already dispersed, he quietly and peacefully continues what he has already begun, tearing off pieces one after another. As a result, decent holes are formed.

The fabric edging around its entire perimeter can cause quite a bit of discomfort in older cases. Even if it itself is waterproof, manufacturers cover the cuts with a fabric edging that collects absolutely everything that flies past the mouth. While the remains of porridge and puree can be wiped off from the cover, it is problematic to do this from the fabric side - the food is immediately absorbed. Washing such a thing is very difficult and only by hand. At the same time, most manufacturers warn against washing, otherwise safety is not guaranteed.

At home, many parents try to “keep” their babies without diapers and wear panties and rompers. If you often “do your business” while sitting (the little ones won’t tell you when they want to pee), the smell will be strongly absorbed. Washing it even with acetic acid does not help get rid of odors. To avoid this, you need to use disposable diapers. We have developed a special “seat against small surprises”. Its main task is to take everything that stands out into itself. It is pleasantly soft to the body, machine washable, the number of washes is unlimited. You can watch it .

This hit parade is closed by the protruding filler/or lack thereof. If there was foam rubber inside, it crumbles over time and turns into dust. The seat literally turns into a rag. The contents come out through the torn holes.

How to repair or repair a cover for a children's highchair?

This question arises for every mother who is faced with a supported replacement insert.

If you have good patience and nerves, I will suggest effective options repair.

Unfortunately, there are not so many of them, because if the fabric itself is frayed and begins to crumble, you can’t think of anything to do with it.
After all, if the fabric on your sweater starts to creep, or your sweater begins to ripple, you won’t try to revive them, but will go shopping for new things. The same goes for replacing the seat itself.

You can make an effort and put patches where required.

High chair: how to seal the oilcloth, what to do?
1 )The most common, improvised remedy is scotch.
Yes, yes, regular wide tape. They can cover cracked parts. First you need to clean the places that need to be repaired, then connect them as close as possible and apply adhesive tape.

2 )Repair kit from inflatable rings, mattresses, swimming pools...
If the cracked area is small, you can use this method.
How to use them is written in detail with illustrations in each instruction for the inflatable product.

3 )Hot glue gun.
This option is only suitable if there is a small crack.
Insert the glue stick into the gun and heat it up. We tightly connect the torn parts to each other, and without letting them go, apply molten glue on top. We recommend trying to make the seam wider; if it is high, it will be uncomfortable to sit on.

4 ) Sew the torn parts together or put a patch.
I would not recommend this method, since the oilcloth or leather has already begun to crack, and making holes with a needle will loosen them even more. And there is no guarantee that what you sewed on will not fly off with the next piece of the seat.

These four methods will help bring your cape back to life for a while. Just for a while (always unpredictable) because once she starts crawling, she will continue to do what she started, it’s a matter of time.

Let's now look at the shabby accessory through the eyes of a child!

For him, any holes are another reason to pick them out with his small fingers, developing fine motor skills. Even having closed them, the child can later discover them again and put in his back-breaking labor in tearing off what was sealed.

How comfortable will it be for a baby to sit on such upholstery? I think many adults themselves would not want to sit on this. So why give this to the delicate skin of our dear children?
It’s clear that you want to save money on everything. But saving should be economical, and not then run around looking for expensive creams and medicines to heal the skin, soothe your nerves.

If you find yourself in a similar situation, we recommend replacing the cover/seat. You can buy it from the manufacturer or choose tailoring from craftsmen.
If order a branded one - where is the guarantee that after a while the same thing will not happen to it what you already have, and not everyone can offer such replacement covers.
Choosing an individual order - You You decide for yourself what material you want the case from and its colors. As a rule, if you choose wisely, it will last much longer and will delight mother and child every day with its practicality.

At one time I myself was in such a situation. My friends gave me a chair, and a cover “without tears...” I couldn’t sit the little one on hard plastic; I put a blanket and a diaper on it, but it would slide off. I was patient and made my first cover.

The smallest details for each case model have now been perfected. They are hand-sewn by professional craftsmen with love and care, as if for themselves. All together allows you to get a quality product.

You can ensure comfort for your child by ordering a new children's cover yourself.
Let's create comfort together!

In order to grow, the baby needs to eat well. Modern manufacturers of children's furniture, knowing this, have developed many models of comfortable and multifunctional high chairs. Thanks to them, mothers can not only feed their baby in comfortable conditions, but also leave him for a while without worrying about the baby falling.

Quite often, high chairs are sold with a plastic cover that irritates the baby’s skin. In such cases, it is better to make the case yourself.

The cover can be called the main component of such a piece of furniture.

After all, it is on it that the baby sits and it is on it that the child’s mood, the state of his health, and, accordingly, his appetite largely depend. Many highchairs are equipped with oilcloth covers, which can cause irritation and peeling of the baby’s skin if it comes into contact with it. Being in a high chair for a long time, the baby may sweat and begin to be capricious.

How to find a way out of such a situation? The modern textile industry offers a large selection of fabrics made from natural raw materials and ideal for contact with the baby’s delicate skin. If your child is allergic or does not like to sit on oilcloth, if the old cover on the high chair has become unusable and you want to update it, buy a suitable fabric and try to sew a cover. This event will require very little material costs, and the result will exceed all your expectations.

Preparing for cutting

Case pattern diagram.

To make the cover as comfortable as possible, it is better to make it from 3 layers of fabric. For the bottom layer, a rigid fabric is suitable, which will serve as a strong base for the entire structure. The layer is made of padding polyester or siliconized padding polyester, which will give the seat softness. The front part of the chair must be made of soft natural fabric, which will be safe in contact with the child’s body.

If you feel confident and have said to yourself: “I’ll make a comfortable cover for my baby’s high chair,” prepare the following necessary materials and tools:

  1. Cotton, cotton fabric for the top layer.
  2. Sintepon for the layer.
  3. Rigid cotton or cotton + synthetic fabric for the bottom layer.
  4. Tailor's scissors.
  5. Chalk.
  6. Pins.
  7. Threads.
  8. Needle.
  9. Paper or non-woven fabric without adhesive for the pattern.
  10. Pencil.
  11. Sewing machine.

When you decide to sew a cover, you need to have an idea of how the future product should turn out. The most comfortable for feeding a baby are the covers that are attached with special pockets behind the top part chair backs and armrests. In addition, they must have seat belts to keep the baby from falling. If necessary, the entire structure should be easily removable for cleaning and washing.

Most easy way sew a cover and create its pattern - make a pattern from an old cover. This is done as follows:

Straps are threaded through the holes in the case to prevent the child from falling.

  1. Remove the old cover from the high chair.
  2. Straighten all its parts and lay them on the floor.
  3. Attach paper or non-woven fabric to the structure and trace its contours with a pencil. You will get a pattern for the cover.
  4. On the pattern, mark the locations of the stitches. You can cut them with scissors. These holes will be useful when marking parts for stitching.
  5. It is also necessary to mark the slots for the seat belts. To do this, the cover is inserted into the high chair. The pattern must be placed on top and pressed, giving it the shape of a chair. The locations of the slots and bends are marked on the pattern.

Cutting and sewing

When the cover pattern is ready, you can start cutting the product. First, you should cut out the lining and pockets, for which you use stiff cotton or synthetic fabric. With the help of pockets, the cover will be placed on the back and armrests of the high chair. To make pockets, cut out 3 parts according to the pattern: the upper part of the back of the cover and 2 sides. When cutting, do not forget to allow a seam allowance of about 1 cm from the contour of the pattern.

When the details of the pockets are ready, their lower part, with which they will be put on the high chair, should be folded 1 cm and stitched. After this, the pockets should be placed on the front side of the lining fabric with the stitch down and sewn to it using a sewing machine.

Then lining front side The fabric is applied to a well-ironed and evenly laid out material from which the outer part of the cover will be made. Two layers of material should be pinned and basted. Only after this can the part be cut out from soft fabric. Such actions will avoid distortion of the fabric and, accordingly, the entire product as a whole.

Next, the resulting design is applied to the padding polyester layer with the wrong side of the lining, secured with pins, basted and cut out. Then all the parts fastened together are stitched around the perimeter on sewing machine. At the bottom of the future product, you must leave a hole large enough to turn the cover right side out.

The previously made basting is removed from the stitched parts, then the product is turned inside out so that the padding polyester layer remains inside, between the layers of the lining and the facing material. The resulting structure should be laid on a table or floor and a pattern should be laid out on it, on the basis of which stitch markings are applied to the material with chalk. All marked stitch lines are first basted and then stitched on a sewing machine.

A chair cover can solve several problems at the same time: refresh the interior, protect the chair from dirt, or, conversely, cover up scuffs or other flaws. You can purchase a ready-made version, but it is not cheap, and it will take a long time to choose a model. This is why making chair covers with your own hands is so popular.

Materials

The choice of material will depend on many factors. Chair covers can be used for different purposes. You can sew them only for holidays and put them on furniture before guests arrive. Covers for every day will differ from holiday ones both in color and style.

In addition, the room itself plays a role. If the chair is in a children's room, you can choose a fabric of bright colors; for a living room with a classic design, you should choose light and noble shades; for kitchens in the spirit of country or Provence - checkered or floral material.

Regardless of the color, the fabric for the covers should be:

  • Durable and wear-resistant (the covers will have to withstand heavy loads).
  • Do not fray on the cuts, as even the treated seams of such fabrics will unravel due to constant friction.
  • Easy to clean, does not absorb dirt.
  • Easy to iron.
  • Minimally collects dust (for this reason, wool and velvety fabrics such as synthetic velvet and velor are not suitable for covers).

These requirements best meet:

  • Cotton fabrics: satin, twill, denim, just thick cotton fabric.
  • Dense silky fabrics: satin, brocade, silk gabardine.
  • Linen is a smooth or coarsely woven canvas-type fabric.
  • Supplex fabrics are fabrics that stretch equally along both the grain and the weft thread.
  • Furniture fabrics – flock, microfiber and others.

Each of these materials has its own characteristics.

Cotton The options are inexpensive, however, they absorb dirt and fade fairly quickly. A cotton cover can be sewn onto a children's or school chair - this will be a short-lived option, but the child's skin will breathe and sweat will be absorbed.

Denim covers will create an unusual accent in the interior - such products will suit country interiors, loft spaces and others.

Silky to the touch, shiny fabrics are best used for ceremonial covers. They are quite slippery, and sitting on them every day will not be very comfortable. At the same time, covers made from these materials are quite durable. These fabrics drape perfectly, forming heavy and beautiful folds and bows.

Linen the options are durable and convenient because flax has the ability to self-clean. Stains eat into such fabric a little, so linen products “live” longer. Unbleached coarse linen is perfect for kitchens or living rooms in rustic or eco-styles. In this case, the material will look expensive. Linen of finer workmanship, originally colored, is suitable for a living room in a classic style.

Materials biflex The good thing is that the cover made from them can be accurately “placed” on a chair. Due to their high stretchability, they take any shape. It is from these materials that ready-made universal cases are made that are suitable for different models chairs and armchairs. They look less presentable than options made from natural fabrics. But they are durable, do not wrinkle and are easy to wash.

Furniture fabrics difficult to sew and cut. To work with them you will need a reliable sewing machine, thick threads and a matching needle. Usually they have little stretch and do not drape, but such a cover will look like a full-fledged upholstery of a chair. These materials are easy to care for because they require cleaning rather than washing. They can be cleaned with a brush right on the chair - they can withstand quite a lot of such operations.

The fabric should match the chair. Furniture fabrics are best suited for soft chairs that are already upholstered in leather or fabric and have some volume. Expensive silk or linen materials do not need to be used to upholster cheap plastic chairs and stools. It is best to cover such furniture with modest cotton fabric.

Calculations and measurements

Regardless of which model of cover you choose to sew, you will need to measure and write down:

  • back length;
  • back width;
  • seat length;
  • seat width;
  • the length from the seat to the floor, if you want to completely cover the legs;
  • length from the seat down as much as you want.

If you need the legs to be completely covered, for example, with a ruffle, then you need to calculate its length as follows: when finished, the cover should not reach the floor by at least 1 cm. This is necessary so that the chair can be moved conveniently, and the lower edge of the cover does not get dirty and was not damaged.

It is worth taking into account when calculating and additional details, such as ties, bows, pockets.

You need to calculate the fabric consumption taking into account that the parts are laid out along the shared line. That is, the parts must be laid out with a length parallel to the grain thread ( main sign lobar thread - an edge that always runs along the lobe thread).

If you plan to make a ruffle along the bottom of the cover, you must definitely calculate its width. Shallow folds will be obtained with a calculation of 1: 1.5, when you need to add half to the width of the finished ruffle. For example, the finished width of the ruffle will be 70 cm, which means that in order to create light folds, you need to cut out the part at the rate of 70 cm + 35 cm = 105 cm.

There are fold proportions 1: 2 (in our example it will be 70 + 70), 1: 2.5 (70 + 105), 1: 3 (70 + 140) cm and so on. The most frequent and dense folds are obtained with a 1:4 layout.

Furniture covers are usually made from several layers of fabric. That is, only the basic – external – material will not be enough. You will definitely need cushioning materials (sintepon, foam rubber) and lining material.

Constructing a pattern

Chair covers can be either whole or separate. The one-piece model covers the entire seat and the entire back, while the parts of the back and seat are sewn together. The separate option is a cover for the back and a soft seat with a skirt (ruffle) of any length. In principle, the cut details for both options will be the same, the only difference being whether they will be sewn together.

For a separate cover, you need to cut out the parts for the top and seat. On paper you need to build a part identical in shape to the shape of the back of the chair - it can be a rectangle or a rectangle with a rounded top. It should be exactly the same size as the back.

Such a part with seam allowances must be cut out of the main fabric, cushioning material (sintepon) and lining.

For the seat, a part is built on paper identical to the seat of the chair - square, round, trapezoidal. With allowances, it is cut from the main, interlining and lining materials.

The ruffle is cut out as a simple rectangle of the length you need (taking into account the allowance). The finished width should be equal to the sum of the three sides of the seat (front, left and right). When constructing a pattern, you need to lay the material on the folds according to the formula described above.

For one-piece models, the back and seat parts are cut out in the same way, only the front part of the back and the back will be different in length, since the front part will be sewn to the seat, and the back part will simply hang downwards. For holiday options with bows and ties at the back triangular shape, which will be sewn into the side seams.

For those who are completely unfamiliar with creating patterns on paper, there is a life hack - the dummy technique. You need to cover the chair with a “cover” made of newspapers and tape. Then cut it into parts. The resulting pieces will be cut without seam allowances.

Cutting and sewing

An important step before cutting is decating the fabric. This operation is necessary to prevent the fabric from shrinking after washing. If you are using cotton, denim or linen that will shrink after washing, be sure to decant it.

This is done like this:

  • wet a single piece of fabric with water;
  • Dry naturally and iron with a warm iron.

Thus, the parts will have to be cut from already “shrunken” fabric, which means that additional shrinkage does not threaten the future cover.

Patterns need to be laid out on the fabric along the grain thread. This layout is always less economical, but it is necessary to do it this way, because the weft-cut part will warp during the sewing process.

Be sure to consider the direction of the pattern on the fabric!

If this horizontal stripe, then all parts must be cut so that the stripes are horizontal. If, for example, the material depicts flowers, then all the details should be cut so that the stems “look” down and so on.

Cutting is done taking into account seam allowances. On the sides and top of the back you need to make wide allowances - 5-8 cm. This is necessary so that the cover fits the thickness of the chair. On all other seams, it is enough to make an allowance of 1.5 cm, and along the bottom edge - 3 cm.

Experienced craftsmen advise first sewing a cover from inexpensive fabric - an old sheet or duvet cover. This way you can see all the difficult places in advance and correct them.

The sewing technology is individual in each case, but in general the sequence is as follows:

  • First you need to fold wrong sides the main and lining material to each other, laying it with padding polyester, if this is planned. The pieces can be carefully joined along the edges using hand stitches or machine stitching so that they do not move. Then, fold the back pieces with their right sides facing each other and stitch with a regular stitch, leaving 1.5 cm from the edge. It is advisable to process the cut manually using an over-edge seam, overlock or zigzag stitch. If the fabric is synthetic and frays a lot, its edges can be carefully burned with a lighter.
  • If ties are sewn into the side seams of the back of the cover, they must be made in advance. The parts are folded with their right sides facing each other, ground down and turned inside out. It is necessary to iron the ties so that their edges are neat. Next, the ties are inserted into the side seams of the back and sewn together with one seam.
  • Then the skirt is made. It is cut out, the bottom edge is processed with an overlock or zigzag, an allowance of 3 cm is ironed inward and secured with machine stitching. For elegant options made from delicate fabrics, you can not sew the bottom on a machine, but secure this edge with an adhesive “web”, which is glued with an iron. The skirt is folded according to the proportions and secured at the top with hand stitching.

You can simply put hand stitches along the entire ruffle, and then gather it by pulling the thread on both sides. The main thing is that its length matches the sum of the three sides of the seat to which it will be sewn.

  • Next, the main part and the seat gasket are fastened together. The main fabric and seat lining pieces are then placed face to face. The skirt is also inserted there, cut to cut. The seam needs to be pinned and stitched on three sides (left, right and front). Turn the part out through the remaining unsewn cut.
  • Pin together the back and seat parts, stitch and finish the seam.

If the skirt of the cover is long, it is advisable not to sew it into the seam on the seat, but to carefully sew it to the finished cover on top.

Features of the children's model

The cover for a children's high chair is best made from thick cotton materials. The fabric will be breathable and easy to wash. At the same time, it will not be a pity to change the cover when it becomes unusable.

For your baby's high chair, you can choose water-repellent synthetic fabrics that are easy to clean. Since each chair has its own design, you can create a pattern only by tracing the old cover on paper. Carefully consider where there are seams on the finished cover - some of them can be omitted, but in those places where the cover bends, the pattern will need to be cut and seam allowances added.
