Patchwork has been known since ancient times. Our grandmothers and mothers were engaged in this art. And in this case patches were used different forms and flowers. Thanks to such simple things, things were worn for a long time.

Today, patchwork is a gorgeous and elegant style. Craftswomen use it as a tailoring of beautiful garments, such as dresses, sundresses, skirts, blouses. In addition, patchwork is used when sewing a variety of cute items, for example: pillows, blankets, bags, and so on. If you are interested in this style, then you can immediately start creating something extraordinary and magnificent.

What you need to create patchwork clothes

  • Old things,
  • Threads and needles for sewing,
  • Sewing machine,
  • Needles and scissors,
  • various patches,
  • Rulers, pattern paper

In order to create a unique piece, such as a patchwork dress, you will need a wide variety of items. But the main thing is the presence of all kinds of pieces of matter. The bigger, the better. To get started, create an image of the future product in your head, or transfer the sketch to paper. Next, decide for yourself what material you will use to create your work of art.

The choice of material for patchwork

If we talk about what material is better to choose to create an outfit, then there are no restrictions and prohibitions. You can find a similar material that differs, for example, only in color or pattern. Or you can try to combine seemingly incompatible materials. For example, leather and satin or cotton and wool. The main thing in this matter is not to be afraid, but to apply in your work everything that your imagination indicates.

Today, in specialized stores, you can immediately purchase sets for patchwork art. The sets consist of bright and very iridescent pieces of matter of a certain size. Sometimes, you can find themed sets. For instance:

  • Children's sets - the main elements and patterns will be various toys.
  • Floral sets - material with floral ornaments.
  • Sets with insects - butterflies, men, dragonflies.
  • Marine sets - shells, fish, boats.

The kits are very competently and conveniently arranged, and often after the purchase you only have to sew a dress or other thing. That is, you don’t need to select a drawing, try to compose something. As they say, everything is already chosen for you.

Patchwork lovers know how elegant and beautiful this style is, but besides that, it is very laborious and time consuming. Therefore, many stores have foreseen this problem, and offer their customers material in the style of patchwork. It is very convenient and practical. Indeed, many women of fashion can safely purchase such material and, without wasting a lot of time, simply sew a beautiful dress for themselves.

When creating a canvas, the material is cut into different geometric shapes. You can use, for example, only one square, or one circle. And you can combine both in the composition. This style allows you to create the most unique and inimitable masterpieces. Thanks to this, everyone can now sew clothes to their taste and color. At the same time, you can be sure that you will not find a similar thing with a friend or colleague. Patchwork will make your wardrobe stylish and modern.

The second life of old jeans

Master class for beginners

Looking at luxury collections, presented at the fashion week in Paris and Milan, it is hard to imagine that every girl can sew a similar outfit with her own hands. We offer a simple sewing master class stylish vest from old jeans. The algorithm of work is the following:

  • First, let's prepare the canvas. Let's take the old jeans or skirts, cut them into pieces. The more shades there are in the canvas, the more original the product will turn out.

Materials for making a vest

To make the vest brighter, you can add patches of colorful cotton in juicy shades.

  • When the flaps are cut, it is necessary to draw a layout of the elements. Without a sketch, it will be more difficult to correct mistakes. Important point: it is necessary to pre-wash the patches, dry them and iron them. If you plan to add a few scraps of cotton or linen fabric, you should starch them a little so that they hold their shape. Now collect, like puzzles, a pattern.
  • We proceed to the most painstaking part of the process - stitching the blanks. It is quite difficult to do this by hand, it is better to use a sewing machine. So the process will go faster, and the work will be more accurate. To facilitate the work, there is a non-adhesive interlining on sale, which already has a grid for squares or triangles for patchwork. When all the patches are sewn, the canvas needs to be ironed to prepare it for cutting.
  • We draw on paper a pattern of a future vest. You can take a ready-made pattern. We transfer it to the fabric and carefully, with sharp scissors, cut out the blanks. You will get a back, a shelf and a stitched belt. If the vest is fitted, mark the places of the tucks. We perform all the “art” on the fabric with soap or tailor's chalk so that no traces remain.
  • We sew on sewing machine all components. When the vest is ready, iron the product and enjoy the new thing.

Vest blank

In a similar way, you can sew any thing, the patchwork texture of the product will add zest to the outfit. From the remaining flaps, you can sew a handbag, cosmetic bag or a small backpack. If your sewing skills are modest, you can simply decorate your favorite jeans with colored patches, appliqué is one of the easiest ways to decorate.

Kinusaiga

This is a needleless patchwork technique (see diagrams, patterns and patterns) that originated in Asia. The owners of expensive and very short-lived kimonos sought to give them a second life.

The clothes were steamed, cut into shreds, and with their help sketches of drawings were created on the board.

Moreover, the components were not sewn together, but pushed into the prepared slots in the base, they were fixed on the reverse side.

The second life of old jeans

Master class for beginners

Looking at the luxurious collections presented at the fashion week in Paris and Milan, it is hard to imagine that every girl can sew a similar outfit with her own hands. We offer a simple master class on sewing a stylish vest from old jeans. The algorithm of work is the following:

  • First, let's prepare the canvas. Take old denim pants or skirts, cut them into pieces.

An important point: you must first wash the patches, dry them and iron them. If you plan to add a few scraps of cotton or linen fabric, you should starch them a little so that they hold their shape. Now collect, like puzzles, a pattern.
  • We proceed to the most painstaking part of the process - stitching blanks.
  • We sew all the components on a sewing machine.

A little about the Vepsian doll. I will immediately disappoint lovers of amulets: the Vepsian doll is not such, it is just a play doll, which was made by a six-year-old girl for ethnographers in 1975. More precisely, the girl made three play dolls, which are stored in the collection of the Russian Ethnographic Museum in St. Petersburg. The ethno-club "Paraskeva" has existed at the museum for a long time, talented craftswomen of which have the opportunity to work with funds. It was they who, about twenty years ago, brought to light replicas of Vepsian pupae, which “went to the people” and acquired a mass of legends. And today this is the most reliable information about this doll, not only in my opinion, but also in the opinion of the famous "masters" of the folk doll.

Beads with a doll attract a lot of attention, so you should immediately decide in what situations you will wear them. Usually, fabric beads are worn with a folk costume or worn with clothes made of linen or cotton fabric during festivals, holidays summer walks and conducting master classes. And little girls love them too. Yes, and as sling beads for baby games, they are quite suitable if, as an addition to textile beads, you take simple wooden ones and firmly connect all the components.

So, let's begin. I slightly changed the design of the doll and put a scarf on her head not at the very end of the manufacture, but in the process. It turns out, in my opinion, more accurately. If you are making a doll not for beads, but on its own, then a scarf is tied to it at the end of the work. And pay attention that all rectangular details are cut out strictly along the shared or weft thread, so that the raw dress of the kula “fringes” evenly. The whole chrysalis is connected with one thread, that is, in the process of work, the thread is not cut off and does not come off the ball.

You will need:

1. A rectangular patch of light-colored fabric for the head, approximately 7.5 x 7.5 cm in size (if it is 7.5 by 8 cm, it’s not scary).

2. Three pieces of the main fabric for the dress of the doll 7 x 7 cm.

3. Two scraps of additional fabric for pens 7 x 7 cm. They are not in the photo, because when I took the photo, I forgot about the pens, I remembered only in the process of work. I made the handles from the same burgundy fabric as the scarf (a triangular flap in the photo).

4. Patch for a triangular scarf. To prepare it, take a square with a side of 8 cm and cut it in half diagonally. You will also need a piece of metallized or satin ribbon to simulate the lower headdress.

5. Small rectangular piece for an apron 2.5 x 5 cm.

6. Circles from the main and additional fabric for beads with a diameter of approximately 4.5 - 4.7 cm. There should be an even number of them, and how many - at your discretion. I cut circles "by eye", without a template.

7. Wooden, glass or plastic beads. Bigger hole is better.

8. Threads "Iris" and ordinary reinforced 35LL or 45LL in the color of the fabric for beads. My favorite - beige - are invisible on almost any fabric.

9. Needle for handicraft and darning needle with a large eye, not thick and with a sharp tip.

10. Some padding. The stuffing should be of high quality so that you can easily pierce the finished bead. I use holofiber, but not "balls", but the usual one.

12. Convenient sharp scissors.

Making a chrysalis

1. We form a dense ball of stuffing and place it in the center of a light flap for the head. You also need to prepare the threads "Iris" in the color of the fabric of the headscarf.

2. We fit the ball with a fabric “along the oblique”, redistributing all the folds back to the back of the head. The diameter of the head should be approximately 1.5 cm.

3. We place the tail from the ball of thread as shown in the photo, firmly hold the thread.

4. Firmly rewind the resulting head with a thread coming from the ball. We fix 2-3 times with a loop.

Our fastening loop is the same loop that is used in knitting at the very beginning of work, when the loops are thrown on the knitting needles. I will try to explain "on the fingers" how to do it. Turn your right hand with your open palm towards you and bend your thumb and forefinger and throw a thread over them. The thread goes from the skein first to the thumb, then to the index finger. Bend your little finger and ring finger so that they hold the thread under thumb coming from the skein, and the bent middle finger should hold the thread under the index finger. Turn the brush with the back side towards you and place the doll's head in the triangle formed from the thread under the index finger. Tighten the thread.

5. Fold the part of the scarf along the long side to wrong side 0.5 cm and put a piece of ribbon on the wrong side.

6. Using all ten fingers, place the handkerchief over the doll's head and fold over the sides of the head.

7. With a thread coming from the ball, wrap the doll's neck with a scarf and make a couple of fastening loops. Do not cut the thread.

8. Form two identical balls for the chest and place them on the squares of the main fabric with an offset from the center, as in the photo.

9. Cover one of the balls with a cloth in the same way as the head, do not forget that the ball should be closer to one of the corners. We will wrap with a thread that "comes" from the head. Just step back 10-15 cm from the head, hold the ponytail with the thumb of the left hand, and wrap the chest with the right hand. Make a fastening loop.

10. Form the second breast, attach to the first, wrap and fasten the two breasts together.

11. Tape the chest to the workpiece.

On the back between the head and the waist (thread) there should be a distance equal to the height of the chest, otherwise your doll will turn out with its head up.

12. Take one of the hand scraps.

13. Bend one of the corners to the wrong side, as shown in the photo.

14. Fold the workpiece in half, as in the photo.

15. Roll the handle blank into a tube with an offset.

16. Attach to the side and tape the handle to the doll.

17. Twist the second handle, attach and tape to the doll. Don't forget to loop a couple of times.

18. On the third square for the dress, fold the corner to the wrong side, drape slightly, attach and tape the patch to the back of the doll.

19. Apply front side detail of the apron for the doll.

20. Tape the apron to the doll and loop it a couple of times. In the photo, the thread is on the side, and it must be brought forward so that it remains under the apron. Now the thread can be cut.

21. Lower the apron down and the doll is ready!

To make a doll face or not - the choice is yours. I embroidered a face for my doll. If you also decide to embroider, then do not take a black thread, take a brown one. The black thread looks rough, and the brown thread seems darker than it actually is.

Making beads

1. With a seam “over the edge to the assembly”, collect the circle on the thread, at the same time bending the edge of the circle inward by 2-3 mm with a needle. Do not confuse this seam with an over-the-edge seam. In our case, we “pick up” a few stitches on the needle, then pull out the needle and pick up a few stitches again until we reach the knot in a circle.

2. Pull the workpiece slightly. Check that all stitches are more or less parallel to each other.

3. Insert the already formed ball inside. Experiment with stuffing, the ball should be tight so that the fabric fits it as best as possible, with a minimum of folds. It is possible that the bead will not work the first time, then cut another circle from the fabric and repeat this work, and the old circle will have to be thrown away.

4. Thread tighten and secure. If the stuffing sticks out, carefully push it inside the bead with the tips of the scissors. If it was not possible to pull the circle to the end, sew the bead in the “gossamer” method, connecting the hole with stitches made opposite each other. After you have made the bartack, do not cut the thread immediately, but stick the needle next to the bartack and bring out the beads on the other side. Now cut the thread "at the root". The diameter of the finished bead is 1.5-1.7 cm.

Bead assembly

1. Lay out the doll and beads as they will look when finished.

2. Prepare the string. You can take it ready-made, or you can make it yourself. I twist from two Iris threads of equal length. For the lace, measure twice the length of the beads, add 20 cm for the doll's belt and another 20 cm for twisting the thread and knots. Tie two threads and secure the knot with a pin on the back of a chair or sofa. Twist the threads one at a time in the direction of the factory twist. After twisting one thread, I usually hold it with my teeth while I twist the second, so if you can find a helper to hold the thread, great! Pull the threads together and tie in a knot. Now slowly release, the threads should twist with each other. Make sure that the threads are twisted with each other, and not with themselves, straighten such wrong twists.

3. We begin to string beads. We tie a good knot at the end of the cord and first we string a bead, which will be at the end of the doll's belt. It's good if you found ready-made beads with a large hole. If not, then every time after stringing the bead out of the fabric, you will have to pull the cord out of the needle and thread it into the bead in the same way as in the photo below. If the beads are beautiful, then the time spent is justified.

4. Then we pierce the handle of the doll from the back.

5. Turn the doll over and measure the desired length of the tail of the lace with a bead for the belt.

6. We string the beads one by one. The assembly, the ugly side of the woven beads, should face down.

7. When all the beads are strung, we pierce the other handle of the doll and bring out the needle with the cord behind the doll. We string the second bead for the belt, put beads on ourselves or the mannequin, check the length, adjust all the beads and only then tie a knot and cut off the cord.

We tie the ends of the belt in front. Thus, it will always be possible to untie the doll's belt and change the length of the beads.

Beads are ready!

If you embroidered the face of the doll, then you can rouge the cheeks. To do this, use a knife to erase the lead of an ordinary red pencil into powder and gently apply it on your cheeks with a cotton swab.

All sizes of shreds for the doll and beads are arbitrary, you can experiment and achieve the result that suits you.

Happy creativity!
