Why does the body itch during pregnancy

Whole body itching during pregnancy is not as common as local itching. As a rule, itching of the whole body during pregnancy manifests itself at night in the 2nd trimester, since during the day the expectant mother is distracted by household chores or chores at work.

Itchy skin during pregnancy has a long list of underlying causes. These can be skin diseases, both rash and hives, as well as failures in the liver and kidneys, and the digestive system. Often, hormonal changes associated with an increase in estrogen cause cholestasis and bile stasis. Bile acids, getting on the skin, provoke itching in pregnant women.

Dry skin also causes itchy skin during pregnancy. In this case, you should use emollients and moisturizers for personal care. Milk or body butter can help relieve itching during pregnancy.

If toxins in the body become the cause of the itching of the body, then the doctor prescribes activated charcoal. It is not recommended to drink activated carbon on your own without a doctor's prescription.

The outflow of bile is facilitated by No-Shpa. During liver diseases, drugs are prescribed: Carsil, Essentiale and others.

If the skin itches during pregnancy after food, for example, after exotic fruits, seafood, then you should listen to your body and not experiment with food at the time of gestation.

Itching of the body during pregnancy, regardless of the symptoms of manifestation and the severity of irritation, should be diagnosed by the attending physician. Itching of the breasts during pregnancy is a natural process associated with bearing a baby. Firstly, the breast in a pregnant woman increases in size, and secondly, in the milk ducts, it begins to be produced breast milk(colostrum). Milk flow is characterized by itching in the breast. Often, itching of the breast during pregnancy is noted in 2-3 trimesters.

Breasts itch during pregnancy also due to an increase in its size and the appearance of stretch marks. This causes some discomfort in the pregnant woman. At this time, it is important to understand that the skin of the breast is very sensitive and during scratching, thin and delicate tissues can be damaged, irritated and reddened.

As the sensitivity of the breast skin increases, an allergic reaction can be another reason why breasts itch during pregnancy. Synthetic clothing, cosmetics, washing powder are frequent irritants.

Itching of the breasts during pregnancy is often triggered by a tight bra. Breasts are gradually increasing in size and require more space. In this case, the pregnant woman should choose a bra of the appropriate size.

Why the stomach itches during pregnancy

Itching of the abdomen during pregnancy can have both dangerous and safe symptoms. First, the stomach itches during pregnancy due to its enlargement and the appearance of stretch marks. Secondly, itching of the abdomen during pregnancy can be caused by more serious factors: cholecystitis, hepatitis, cholestasis.

With pathologies in a pregnant woman, the so-called "sandy itch" begins, which manifests itself at night during sleep.

The stomach also itches during pregnancy in special cases:

  • Hepatitis A before pregnancy
  • Chronic cholecystitis (caused by abnormal S-shaped biliary anatomy or biliary folds)
  • Hormonal drugs that the pregnant woman took
  • Multiple pregnancy
  • Women carrying a boy
  • Age over 35

If the itching of the abdomen during pregnancy is associated with the liver, then the pregnant woman is referred for additional examination. To identify pathologies, the pregnant woman is sent for a biochemical blood test and liver function tests for ALT, bilirubin, AST. Scheduled visits to doctors can help identify abnormalities in the tests and prevent the development of itching.

If the tests were normal, then the doctor rejects the version of itching associated with liver failure.

Skin cover

Every fifth woman complains of itching during pregnancy. In fact, it is a mild manifestation of pain, but since the receptors responsible for the onset of pain are very slightly irritated, nervous system does not take them properly. Unpleasant sensations can spread throughout the body or be localized in any one area: on the legs, genitals, vulva and in other places.

Usually itching during pregnancy is accompanied by other unpleasant symptoms:

  • strong stretch marks on the skin in the area of the growing abdomen and mammary glands;
  • excessive dryness of the skin on the face and body;
  • the appearance of a rash on the face, arms and legs, abdomen and chest;
  • yellowness of the sclera and skin;
  • a change in the color of urine to a darker one.

The main causes of itchy skin during pregnancy are as follows:

    • Nervous strain, stress, emotional instability. This itching is called psychogenic, and a woman often complains that her whole body itches, even with minimal irritating factors. The discomfort is especially disturbing at night, when the brain is resting. This itching is localized most often in the genital area, armpits, and also on the inner side of the thighs.
    • The habit of wearing synthetic clothes and underwear, using aggressive alkaline detergents for washing.
    • Too fast weight gain, pregnancy with twins, which leads to damage to the connective tissue and to fluid retention in it. A fast-growing belly provokes the appearance of stretch marks on the skin. The consequence of this is itching in the area of stretched tissue, which can also be in the lumbar region.
    • The accumulation of sweat in the folds of the skin, as well as inadequate personal hygiene.
    • Problems from the endocrine system, in particular, diabetes mellitus, which developed during pregnancy, chronic inflammation of the gallbladder, bile stasis.
    • Such processes can occur due to an increase in the level of estrogen in the blood, which is a natural consequence of pregnancy. A change in the hormonal balance towards an increase in the concentration of female sex hormones leads to the release of bile acids into the blood, which can provoke the appearance of itchy skin.

One more common reason itchy legs are edema that often occurs in women late in pregnancy. Edema appears due to the increased load on the kidneys, as a result of which the body does not have time to remove excess fluid.

Severe edema requires mandatory therapeutic measures, since they are fraught with serious complications during childbirth and can lead to the development of pathologies in the unborn child.

Discomfort in the intimate area

Unpleasant sensations in the genital area often accompany late pregnancy; women may complain of vaginal itching and swelling, and irritation of the labia. This discomfort can be accompanied by flushing of the external genital organs, problems with urination, burning sensation and pain.

In some cases, cracks and scratches appear at the site of irritation, which aggravates the situation, since infection easily penetrates through the injured mucous membrane.

Itching in the genital area in pregnant women can be caused by inadequate skin care, as big belly complicates the usual hygiene measures, and sweat accumulates in the formed folds.

In addition, discomfort in the intimate area can be the result of various inflammatory diseases, while itching can be localized both in the external genital area and in the vagina. The cause of inflammation can be an imbalance in the vaginal microflora, due to changes in hormonal levels.

Itching in the genital area is one of the symptoms of various infectious diseases, including sexually transmitted diseases, as well as fungal infections of the vagina, in particular, with thrush.

Other pathologies include bacterial vaginosis, nonspecific colpitis, the causes of which are most often staphylococci, streptococci and Escherichia coli, herpes infection and other diseases.

Itching in the anus can be caused by helminths (worms).

All of these recommendations apply to cases where itching in late pregnancy is due to physiological reasons. If such discomfort is a symptom of a disease, therapeutic measures depend on its nature:

Itching during pregnancy is not so common, but this symptom cannot be called rare either. Usually, the appearance of itching refers to the second half of pregnancy, more often from the 6th month. Sometimes it occurs simultaneously with yellowing of the skin, sometimes on its own. Itching of the skin is especially pronounced in pregnant women at night, possibly because during the day a person is distracted by various affairs and thoughts, at night he more notice ailments like itching of the skin.
Why does itchy skin during pregnancy? Any skin manifestations, unless they are independent dermatological diseases, indicate some kind of malfunction in the liver. In this case, an increase in estrogen levels during pregnancy leads to cholestasis - stagnation of bile in the liver, while bile acids are released in excess, those that, getting on the skin, cause itching. Often during the same period, liver function tests - ALT, bilirubin - change - the numbers of these indicators may increase. In order to alleviate the condition, you need to follow several rules. First, take a warm shower more often, after which lubricate the skin, especially in itchy areas, with neutral body milk or oil. So the excess of bile acids is mechanically removed from the skin, and so that the skin does not dry out after water and detergents, emollients and moisturizers are used. Of the medicines, cholestyramine relieves itching well, various talkers, activated charcoal - removes all excess from the intestines. In addition, it is good to use substances that improve liver function, relieve cholestasis, although complete relief from itching of the skin is likely to occur after childbirth. The liver can be supported with conventional hepatoprotectors, such as Essentiale, Carsila, to improve the outflow of bile, use no-spa. There are also drugs that help the liver, less known, but more effective - this is a derivative of animal bile - ursofalk and ursosan, a plant substance - hepatofalk - plant. Of course, all this should be used only after advice with the attending physician, and just in case, visit an infectious disease specialist, pass all the necessary tests in order to exclude a more serious liver damage, for example, viral hepatitis, which, like any disease, may well manifest itself in during pregnancy.
Itching of the skin, however, less often, can be caused by intolerance to any food product, especially exotic, which the woman did not use before, and during pregnancy she decided to pamper herself - this role is often played by seafood - shrimp, oysters, mussels - they just need exclude from food and no longer experiment with food.
In general, we must try, as always, to understand the causes of itching during pregnancy and to do the maximum possible so that this unpleasant symptom, which interferes with normal sleep and brings a lot of trouble to pregnant women, is minimized.
