A person close to the Lord constantly performs the same ritual, but does not think about its meaning. While in church or at home, all believers are baptized, but few people know how to properly baptize Orthodox Christians. Before we talk about the rules of baptism, we should remember a little history and find out where this tradition came from and what it means.

How to be baptized correctly, historical background

Today's way of crossing oneself took shape over a certain period of time. Catholics and Orthodox do this differently, because they are based on slightly different religious traditions.

In the initial stages of its inception, Christians crossed themselves with one finger of their right hand, touching their forehead, chest and lips. And they did this before reading the Gospel at every Mass. A little later, they began to use several fingers and even the whole palm to cross.

Looking at the image of Jesus Christ, you can see that on the icons he is represented with two fingers raised (middle and index), and the remaining phalanges are closed, so priests often use just such a gesture.

When the Orthodox branch of Christianity was formed, believers began to baptize the forehead, left and right shoulders, and also the navel. Only in 1551 the navel was changed to the chest, justifying this by the presence of a heart in this part of the body.

Then in 1656, in the book “The Tablet,” the statement was first put forward that one should cross oneself with three fingers, placing them on the forehead, stomach and shoulders. Anyone who did otherwise was called heretics. And only several decades later, two-finger and three-finger baptism was accepted.

How to be baptized correctly by an Orthodox Christian, from right to left or vice versa

You can often hear various arguments about how to cross yourself from left to right or from right to left, and how many fingers to use. The tradition of crossing oneself from right to left, touching first the forehead, then the navel and shoulders, with three fingers closed, came from Byzantium. Three-fingered means the Christian’s faith in God the Father, His Son and the Holy Spirit, that is, in the Holy Trinity. This is how you can attract the grace of the Lord to yourself and your loved ones.

Each gesture during baptism has a symbolic meaning:

  • by touching the forehead, a person sanctifies his mind;
  • By sanctifying the belly, the believer blesses all his internal organs;
  • moving to the shoulders, the whole body is sanctified.

The right shoulder always comes first, then the left. According to legend, it is the right side of a person that is the best. Angels sit on the right shoulder and to the right of the person is the entrance to heaven. Left side is perceived as hell, so first the right shoulder is baptized, then the left shoulder. Thus, the believer asks for salvation and admission to heaven.

Sometimes triplets are interpreted differently:

  • forehead - sky;
  • belly - earth;
  • shoulders - the Holy Spirit, which connects all living things.

After the Orthodox has crossed himself, he should bow low as a sign of gratitude to the Lord for all his blessings.

If you need to cross another person, for example, a child, you need to place the cross on him as if he were doing it himself. If the child is standing with his back, they cross from right to left, if he is facing - from left to right. This is exactly how the melting sign of the cross will emerge.

How to be baptized correctly by an Orthodox Christian in a church, basic rules

Let's describe detailed diagram How Orthodox Christians are baptized:

  1. you need to cross yourself with three fingers;
  2. three fingers - thumb, index and middle - are folded at the same level as a sign of equality. This gesture symbolizes the Trinity;
  3. little finger and ring finger placed on the palm. This means faith in the humanity of the Son of God;
  4. putting his fingers to his forehead, saying: “In the name of the Father”;
  5. then they descend to the stomach: “And the Son”;
  6. crossing the right and left shoulders, they finally say: “And the Holy Spirit.”

Thus, the correct crossing procedure occurs. This is a very significant ritual. Therefore, before carrying it out anyhow, you should study why to be baptized.

You need to be baptized correctly, starting from entering the temple. They do this three times, each time accompanied by a low bow. This is how a person openly declares his faith in Jesus Christ. In addition, the believer is baptized at home, in front of icons, before going to bed and waking up in the morning, after eating and at the sight of a sacred building.

Proper baptism is of great importance. You need to do this slowly and mentally turn to God. The bow after the sign should be done only when the hand is lowered, so as not to break the cross painted on the body.

If the sign of the cross is made quickly, with the entire palm, it is considered blasphemy and a great sin. This shows disrespect for the Holy Father and pleases the evil spirits. Therefore, before crossing yourself, you need to mentally understand the importance of this procedure and do it as correctly as possible.

May the Lord protect you!

Watch also the video in which Schemamonk Joachim tells how Orthodox Christians should be baptized:

The sign of the cross is a visible evidence of our faith, so it must be performed carefully and with reverence.
To find out whether the person in front of you is Orthodox or not, you just need to ask him to cross himself, and by how he does it and whether he does it at all, everything will become clear. Remember the Gospel: “He who is faithful in little is also faithful in much” (Luke 16:10).

The power of the Sign of the Cross is unusually great. In the Lives of the Saints there are stories about how demonic spells were dispelled after the overshadowing of the Cross. Therefore, those who are baptized carelessly, fussily and inattentively simply please the demons.

How to make the Sign of the Cross correctly?

1) You need to put three fingers of your right hand (thumb, index and middle) together, which symbolizes the three faces of the Holy Trinity - God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. By joining these fingers together, we testify to the unity of the Holy Indivisible Trinity.

2) We bend the other two fingers (little finger and ring finger) tightly to the palm, thereby symbolizing the two natures of the Lord Jesus Christ: Divine and human.
3) First, folded fingers are placed on the forehead to sanctify the mind; then on the stomach (but not lower) - to sanctify internal abilities (will, mind and feelings); after that - on the right and then on the left shoulder - to sanctify our bodily strength, because the shoulder symbolizes activity (“to lend a shoulder” - to provide assistance).

4) Only after lowering the hand do we bow from the waist so as not to “break the Cross.” This is a common mistake - bowing at the same time as the Sign of the Cross. This should not be done.
The bow after the Sign of the Cross is performed because we have just depicted (overshadowed ourselves) the Calvary Cross, and we worship it.

The sign of the cross accompanies the believer everywhere. You should make the sign of the cross at the beginning of prayer, during prayer and after it ends. We cross ourselves, getting out of bed and going to bed, going out into the street and entering the Temple, venerating icons and holy relics; Before eating, we cross ourselves and sign the Sign of the Cross on the food. We are baptized when starting a new business and finishing it. One must be baptized in all important situations in life: in danger, in grief, in joy. Mothers, sending their children from home, give their mother's blessing, signing the child with the Sign of the Cross and betraying your child to God’s protection. Cross of Christ sanctifies everything and everyone, and therefore the image of the believer on himself is saving and spiritually beneficial.

An Orthodox baptized person should always wear a cross!

Since the first centuries of Christianity, every believer wears the Cross on his chest, fulfilling the words of the Savior: “If anyone wants to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.” (Mark 8:34).
The meaning of wearing a cross is revealed in the words of the Apostle Paul: “I have been crucified with Christ” (Gal. 2:19). The consecrated pectoral cross is a symbol of faith and a sign of belonging to the Church of Christ. The cross protects from temptation and evil. Anyone who does not want to wear a cross himself rejects God’s help.
The pectoral cross can be anything: made of ordinary metal, silver, gold, or wood. Also, it is not important to have a cross on a chain or on a string - as long as it holds tightly. The main thing is that you wear it. It is desirable that the Cross be consecrated in the Church. On the back of Orthodox crosses, according to tradition, an inscription is made: "Save and preserve."

You cannot wear a pectoral cross and zodiac signs (or any amulets, amulets, etc.) on the same chain - because a pectoral cross is a sign of belonging to the Church of Christ, and zodiac signs, amulets, amulets are evidence of adherence to various superstitions (you shouldn’t wear them at all) - all this is from the evil one.

An Orthodox cross must be worn on the body, under clothing, without showing it off. Until the 18th century, only Bishops had the right to wear the Cross over their clothes, and later - Priests. Anyone who dares to be like them commits the sin of self-sanctification.

Even if you have absolutely no one to kiss right now, you shouldn’t close this topic to yourself. It’s like in sports: even if you don’t participate in competitions today, training is still important. They will allow you to rise to the occasion at the right time.

Train on your hand

  1. Make an OK gesture with your left hand. Make sure that thumb lay on top of the index nail.
  2. Place the thumb of your right hand into the resulting letter “O”. Squeeze your “O” so that it wraps tightly around your thumb.
  3. Remove your right thumb. Now your “O” looks like a pair of lips parted, waiting for a kiss. You can begin the main phase of training.
  4. Touch the "O" with your lips. Start lightly kissing the fingers closed in a circle, experimenting with force, pressure and light biting.
  5. Keep track of what exactly your fingers feel. You will feel about the same when you finally move on to real kissing. Doesn't it hurt your fingers? Are you kissing too wet? Control your sensations and change your kissing tactics depending on them.
  6. Experiment with your tongue, running it inside the “O” and caressing your fingers with it.
  7. Practice kissing sometimes more softly, sometimes more forcefully. Such training will make you more confident when it comes to kissing a real partner.

And on fruits and vegetables

  1. Take a soft fruit with delicate skin - a peach, a large apricot, a mango... Some recommend a tomato - this is also an option. Choose to your taste - the main thing is that such kisses are pleasant.
  2. Bite off a small piece so that the bite area is the size of someone's mouth. It will be your simulator.
  3. Start softly kissing the luscious lips, experimenting with pressure and rhythm.
  4. Clasp your lips first top part“mouth”, then the lower one. Make catching movements with your lips to bring them to the level of automaticity.
  5. Don't forget to work with your tongue, running it inside the fetus.

How to kiss your partner correctly

First of all, keep in mind: kissing is an extremely intimate and subjective matter. So be sure to monitor his (her) reaction!

Some people like deep kisses, some do not tolerate someone else's tongue in their mouth, others may be irritated by excessive moisture. As a rule, people are embarrassed to talk about discomfort. But next time they will try to avoid “wrong” kisses. Try to ensure that your kisses meet the expectations of the specific person.

Act confidently, but from afar

Don't be afraid to take the first step. Don't ask permission. If this is your first kiss and you are not entirely sure of your reaction, start with a kiss on the forehead. Or the tip of the nose. If your partner doesn’t mind, then pull him towards you and gently kiss him on the lips.

Sexologist Claudia Six recommends How to French Kiss: 9 Sex Therapist-Approved Tips start with establishing what is significant and only after that move on to kissing from afar.

Learn to relax your lips

At first, the pressure is inappropriate. Let your lips be as relaxed as possible - then your partner will feel a gentle and soft touch. This will create anticipation and excitement in him. Only then can you tighten your mouth: the contrast between the previous softness and strength will let the person you kiss understand that he arouses passion in you.

Perhaps in general this is not best way kissing, but one of the best is to start the passionate stage. Just grab one of your partner’s lips (it doesn’t matter whether it’s upper or lower) with your own and start making gentle sucking movements.

There are legends about the French kiss (the deep one with the tongue). However, this is a rather controversial type. Not everyone likes such deep penetration. Therefore, remember the algorithm:

  1. Without removing your lips from your partner's lips, open your mouth wider. The partner will feel emptiness and freedom of action and, perhaps, will be the first to decide to penetrate deeper with his tongue.
  2. Press your partner's lips with your own so that his is between yours. Then gently run the tip of your tongue along the inside of the bottom lip of the person you are kissing. Make one smooth, quick movement. If your counterpart likes this type of kiss, he will respond.
  3. Be prepared to retreat. If, despite the fact that you carefully followed the steps from the previous paragraphs, you have not received an answer, there is no need to insist. Save French kissing for next time and focus on the previous techniques.

Use your hands

Kissing is a complex physiological process that is not limited only to the mouth area. By gently touching your partner's shoulders, arms, and torso with your hands, you will increase the degree of . Start touching from the hips, and then slowly raise your hands along the back to the neck and shoulders. Then, if you do not meet resistance, you can cup your partner’s face with your palms. This will make your kisses even more intimate and passionate.

The sign of the cross is a sacred action for Christians of the Orthodox faith. It is believed that by doing this a person calls upon himself Divine power. Orthodox believers believe that Christ died on the cross and thereby showed His Great love for perishing humanity. By his death he defeated Satan and consecrated the Cross as a weapon against the enemy of man. An Orthodox believer needs to reverently approach the sign of the cross and use it correctly.

As early as the third century, Tertullian mentioned the sign of the cross. After him, John Chrysostom also wrote about the importance of the sign of the cross when leaving home. Without this, sacred reverence for God in every day is unthinkable for a believer.

How to be baptized and apply the sign of the cross correctly?

  • For the sign of the cross to be correct, Orthodox believers join together the first three fingers. right hand. This is a symbol of the One Trinity. By this, a believer shows that he believes and hopes in the Holy Trinity.
  • The little finger and ring finger should be pressed tightly to the palm, as a symbol of the descent of Jesus Christ to the sinful earth. Also, two fingers are like an image of the two natures of the Son of God. One of them is human, the second is Divine.
    First, the combined fingers are placed on the forehead. As an image of the believer wanting to sanctify his mind.
  • In continuation, folded fingers are placed on the stomach, thereby sanctifying one’s feelings. And then they overshadow the right shoulder with a sign, then the left shoulder. This is how physical forces are renewed and sanctified.
  • Then comes the bow. Orthodox believers do this in order to express their respect and love for the Calvary cross.

God became incarnate in man in order to be crucified for the sake of sinful people. The crucifixion and death of Christ symbolize Life. Just as wheat cannot bear fruit until the grains die. Thus, the death of Jesus represents life for every person. The cross as a symbol of life. Without death on the cross there would be no Resurrection. Therefore, the Cross for Orthodox Christians is a symbol of shrine.

You should always be baptized slowly and say to yourself: “In the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Amen.” The meaning of this is that the Christian says with this sacred act that he believes in the Trinity and is ready to serve God.

Some bow and cross themselves at the same time. But you don't need to do that. The order must be followed - first cross yourself, then bow.

When should you be baptized?

An Orthodox believer can and is obliged to be baptized in different situations. In times of joy and in days of sadness, in doing a good deed, after waking up from sleep and when it’s time to go to bed. Moments of danger are also a reason to cross yourself.
