Hello, dear readers, Lena Zhabinskaya is with you!

Having experience with two newborns, and with Eva he is very fresh - she is three months old - born at different times of the year - spring and autumn - I know exactly what clothes to buy for a newborn for the first time.

I prepared very thoroughly for the birth of my first child, Lyovushka, buying everything in stores.

The result: a lot of wasted money and mountains of given and thrown away items that we never wore.

With Eva, I was already smarter. Everything I bought was useful, no more, no less. How to avoid repeating my first mistake? How to buy the best without spending huge sums? Find out in the article.

They are not needed to swaddle a toddler! And in order to be able to place the baby on any surface, simply placing them underneath: on the parent’s bed, on the sofa in the living room, in the playpen, in the stroller, in the crib, etc.

This is done, firstly, for reasons of hygiene, as in the case of a sofa in the living room or a playpen, and secondly, to reduce washing, as in the case of a crib. Obviously, it is easier to wash a diaper than a sheet.

Diapers will get dirty regularly: babies often spit up and leak diapers (especially boys).

Therefore, in order not to wash ourselves every day, we take 12-15 diapers.

Choose 100% cotton fabrics that are soft and comfortable to the touch.

Not tacky red-blue-green, but in calm tones, so that they don’t catch the eye in the interior, because they will be everywhere.

Home clothes.

The newborn will spend most of his time at home, so this is the main part of his wardrobe.

If the baby is born in the spring or summer, he will need approximately 4 T-shirts and bodysuits. every.

If it’s not hot outside (less than 22 degrees), it’s best to wear a bodysuit for a walk that covers your tummy and keeps your baby warm enough.

If the baby is expected in the fall or winter, when the apartment can be cool (18-20 degrees), cotton overalls or slips in an amount of about 4 pieces are optimal.

They can also be used in cool summers, worn for walks on their own or over a T-shirt.

What is the advantage of overalls and slips?

  • they essentially replace two items (rompers and a vest);
  • fewer items - easier to dress and undress the baby;
  • nothing gets up when you pick up your little one or when he moves in the crib;
  • a minimum number of layers of fabric on the diaper, which reduces the likelihood of tugging, squeezing the delicate baby skin and the appearance of diaper rash (compared to when wearing, for example, a long-sleeve bodysuit and romper pants - you end up with as many as three layers of clothing on the bottom, and she so hot in a diaper!);
  • if you are on a walk, there is no air for the newborn.

Warm clothes.

Two overalls or slips: one of them is fleece, the other is warmer, like a knitted one.

We will use them either as outerwear in cool summer and warm spring and autumn, or as intermediate clothing when walking in winter.

A vest that we will wear instead of a jacket if it is too warm in a fleece overall, but too cool in just a cotton one. One piece will be more than enough.

Outerwear.

We will need it in the cold autumn, spring and winter.

A warm envelope with insulation is optimal because it is as easy as possible to put on.

But in the form of overalls it is also quite suitable.

If you have the whole autumn, winter and spring ahead of you, then it is optimal to choose a size with a reserve, for example 68, so that it is enough for the whole season, because at first children grow very quickly.

Hats and socks.

If the air temperature is above 18 degrees, then a hat is not needed at all.

That is, we don’t dress newborns in bonnets indoors! If in doubt, put such a cap on yourself and try to walk around the clock in it. I doubt you won't want to take it off.

If it is less than 18 Celsius outside, then choose a hat, just like yourself, in accordance with the weather conditions. Cotton in spring and knitted in winter.

Socks will also be required to accompany the overalls, and not as an independent permanent item of clothing.

The foot is naturally programmed to walk in cold weather, so do not spoil your child from birth with woolen socks at plus 25 Celsius.

That is, we also don’t need socks indoors.

How many hats and socks do you need? 2-3 pieces of different heat.

So little because they practically do not get dirty and do not need regular washing.

Mittens.

Usually, envelopes and onesies for babies have special closures on the hands, so gloves are not required at all.

But if suddenly your overalls do not have such a function, you can buy mittens for cold weather and very warm winter ones.

Size.

Which one to choose? The smallest size is considered 56 - corresponds to a height of 56 cm. Most newborns are already 50-55 cm at birth.

Therefore, they can wear this size for a couple of weeks maximum.

My children were born 56 and 57 cm tall. Much of what was given to us immediately after birth was not enough.

It is also better to choose outerwear of at least size 62 or even larger if you plan to wear it for longer than 6 months (for example, you are born in October, but it will only be warm in May).

What you shouldn't buy.

Now a short review of useless things that I threw away in mountains the first time and didn’t even buy the second time.

Long sleeve bodysuit.

A strange piece of clothing: under what conditions would you want to wrap your baby up on top and still leave his legs bare? If it’s cool, then it’s more logical to wear a jumpsuit or slip that will cover both arms and legs.

If you plan to wear a bodysuit on top and panties below, then we end up with a bunch of extra layers of fabric on the bottom, which is already hot in a diaper.

Sliders.

Why put fabric on the legs, but leave the chest and shoulders bare?

If you plan to wear a vest or bodysuit on top, then this is again a bunch of extra layers in general and on the butt in particular.

It would be more logical to wear a jumpsuit or a slip again.

Booties.

A newborn does not need any shoes because he does not walk. If it’s cold, then warm socks will do the job.

Scratches.

Speech pathologists are sounding the alarm because it has been scientifically proven that they can inhibit the baby’s development, for example, the skill of grasping objects, and exclude the baby from receiving tactile sensations, which together can lead to a delay in early development.

What should you do instead? Forget about scratches, cut your little one’s nails and don’t be afraid of scratches.

This was the minimum optimal set of clothes. Along the way, you will understand what you are comfortable with and what you are not, and in the future you will be able to purchase things according to your personal needs.

If the information was useful, save it to yourself on social networks so as not to lose it and subscribe to blog updates.

Lena Zhabinskaya was with you, bye-bye!

The first days, weeks and months of a baby’s life are full of new achievements and positive emotions. But from the parents’ side, this period looks very alarming. How to feed your baby? ? These and many other questions are asked by every expectant mother.

It is worth noting that postponing the purchase of children's clothing until the last minute is not very practical. On the day of birth and in the following days, running around the shops in search of beautiful things will be quite difficult.

It is also worth noting that newborn babies grow quickly, so it is simply not profitable to buy a countless number of small onesies and onesies. Therefore, it is worth understanding in detail how much and what kind of clothing your baby will need in the first weeks after birth.

What clothes does a newborn need in summer?

Mothers expecting the birth of their baby during the warmest summer period logically wonder what things the baby may need immediately after giving birth. As in winter and other seasons, it is not recommended to overheat the baby. They do not tolerate overheating, as well as hypothermia, well.

In fairly warm summer weather with daytime temperatures of +25 degrees Celsius and above, you may need the following things:

1. Body made of 100% cotton without synthetic impurities;
2. Diapers;
3. Romper and vest (can be replaced with a 100% cotton slip);
4. A hat or cap made of cotton;
5. Summer suit for discharge with a light envelope. The latter can be replaced with diapers - calico and knitted;
6. Mittens, scratches;
7. Cotton socks.

This kit will be enough for discharge on a hot summer day. You need to focus primarily on the weather and the baby’s feelings. When feeling hot, children, like adults, turn red and their temperature may rise. At temperatures below 20 degrees Celsius, you can dress your baby warmer, at temperatures above 25 degrees - a little lighter. It is recommended to pre-wash purchased clothes with baby soap and iron them.

Summer clothes for newborns for every day

After a rough list of things for the summer has already been compiled, it remains to find out how much clothes does a newborn need? for everyday wear. Special baby bodysuits are very popular among modern mothers. They are convenient because they provide the baby with maximum freedom of movement, unlike baby undershirts, they do not ride up and the process of putting the baby down is greatly simplified.

For the summer, bodysuits with short sleeves, bodysuits - T-shirts, and bodysuits with long sleeves will be useful. It is better to purchase 2-3 varieties of each bodysuit to change. The most inconvenient are the models that need to be put on over the head. They quickly stretch out in the neckline area, and kids don’t really like this method of putting them on. The most comfortable are bodysuits with buttons in the center or on hangers.

Baby vests are a more common type of clothing for babies. Made from cotton, they perfectly absorb moisture and do not irritate the baby's delicate skin. The main condition when buying cotton vests is the absence of strings, snaps and buttons, that is, any parts that can rub the baby’s skin. You will need at least 2-3 pieces of these vests for the summer.

It is better to take rompers with straps. It will be enough to buy 4 pairs of thin pants and 4 pairs of warm ones.
Another practical and very popular item in a children's wardrobe is overalls or so-called slips. They are also light and warm. Three light and two warm will be enough.
Despite the fairly hot weather in summer, the baby will not be able to do without light cotton socks. They can be purchased in quantities of 2-3 pairs.
The cap will protect the child's head from the sun and wind. For a change, you can buy 2-3 light caps.

This list includes almost everything What clothes does a newborn need in summer?.

What clothes does a newborn need for the first time?

Regardless of the time of year when the baby was born, he will certainly need all the things that were listed above. That is, the same undershirts can be supplemented with a pair of insulated fleece models, which will come in handy in winter and on cool autumn days.

Diapers are also an important part of a baby's wardrobe. If new parents stick to the swaddling tradition, they'll need to stock up on a few flannel and cotton swaddles. They will have to be changed quite often, especially if the baby will often “take a break” from diapers. Although simple disposable absorbent diapers are also suitable for this purpose.

Sliders are thin and insulated. Newborn babies grow quickly, so they will outgrow their clothes quite quickly.

Winter babies need special attention to the head. It must be well insulated, for which a special flannel cap is used. It is worn over plain cotton. For the winter, you can purchase several pairs of warm socks. At the same time, knitted wool socks must be worn with another cotton one. Mittens help keep your baby's hands warm and protect him from his own clumsy movements.

If parents are ardent supporters of “dry” infancy and have a positive attitude towards diapers, you can safely buy a bodysuit. It is recommended to take models one size larger so that the baby is as comfortable as possible in diapers and they do not rub his legs.

Parents of winter babies will also have to buy several warm onesies. They can be knitted, woolen or fleece. Instead of overalls, you can buy a simple suit consisting of pants and blouses.

To go outside on cool autumn, winter or spring days, you will definitely need a warm hat. It is not worn on a bare head. Under it, you must additionally wear a thin or warm cap.

Tips for choosing clothes for a newborn

The baby's delicate skin is especially sensitive to the effects of external adverse factors. To protect it from irritation, it is necessary to give preference to clothes made from natural fabrics. As a rule, flannel, terry, cotton, knitted stitch and interlock are used for its production. Any item of clothing should fit the baby fairly loosely and not fit too tightly to the body.

All clothing that comes into direct contact with the baby's skin must have external seams. This arrangement saves the skin from irritation and chafing. Other garments may have traditional inseams, but must be finished with 100% cotton thread.

When buying things with elastic, in particular panties, you need to pay attention to its size and tightness. Models with a thick and not tight elastic band will cause the baby a minimum of discomfort.

You should only purchase from trusted sellers and manufacturers. When choosing Chinese clothing, pay attention to the presence of a specific chemical smell. Many cheap items can be made without meeting certain safety standards.

You shouldn’t immediately dress your child in everything colorful and bright. In the first months of life, it is better to give preference to clothes in soft pastel colors. Delicate colors have a beneficial effect not only on the child’s psyche, but also on the condition of his skin and well-being in general.

If parents still decide to purchase several bright sets for going out, you should definitely pay attention to the paint with which the fabric is dyed. Any low-quality dye will begin to wash out from the very first wash and can harm the baby.

Envelopes for discharge and more

Such a popular device is used for swaddling a baby during discharge from the hospital. Today, the variety of envelopes for discharge is not limited to a standard rectangular blanket. They differ in colors, thickness, decor and even the way of swaddling the baby. The envelope is a very practical item in a child's wardrobe. In winter, it can successfully replace the role of overalls.

But the main advantage of the envelope is the possibility of its further use as a blanket for the baby. Thick envelopes make a good winter blanket, summer ones are great for hot summer nights. Insulated winter envelopes are presented in various knitted models, models with fur and fleece.

Just like regular clothes, the envelope should have high-quality seams, a minimum of fasteners and pleasant colors.

Traditionally, envelopes of soft blue, soft pink, light green, beige and white colors are chosen for checkout.

Modern manufacturers offer customers interesting models of envelopes, in which the top is sewn in the form of a warm blouse with sleeves. That is, in such an envelope the baby has the opportunity to move his arms freely. The bottom of such models usually has a baggy shape, providing maximum freedom for the baby’s legs. This innovation is called “footer”.

How to care for newborn clothes

All the baby's things must be washed as often as possible, using special baby soap or powder. In this case, washing should be carried out using fairly hot water, at a temperature of about 90 degrees.

It is acceptable to use a softening conditioner. The conditioner should also be child-friendly and have a chemical composition that is safe for the baby. All washed and dried items are carefully ironed. Ironing not only helps to make things look neat, but also kills bacteria remaining in the fibers. Before wearing, all items must be removed from tags and labels. Their contact with delicate skin may cause irritation.

"Dowry" for a newborn

In addition to clothes, the baby and parents will need a lot of other things at first. For a comfortable sleep, a newborn will need a crib. Preference should be given to models made from natural wood. Modern models are equipped with a function for adjusting the sides, which makes the crib even more convenient during use. Very often they are additionally equipped with cradles, protective silicone pads, drawers for linen and toys.

The mattress is selected according to the size of the crib. Children under 1 year of age are recommended to sleep on hard spring mattresses; after a year, the child can be transferred to a softer surface. Borders for the crib are also necessary. They make the baby's time in the crib safe and comfortable.

Children up to one year old sleep on pillows. But you can purchase a small pillow or bolster to place under your baby's back while sleeping on his side. You can buy more sheets, especially if you plan to leave your baby in the crib to take so-called air baths.

The oilcloth will help keep the mattress in its original fresh form. It will also be appropriate when the baby sleeps without diapers. It is better to purchase a separate blanket for each season of the year. The role of a blanket can be played by both an envelope-blanket and an envelope-sleeping bag.

Mobile for crib with a self-reproducing unobtrusive lullaby will help your baby fall asleep faster and will become his first toy. Many babies sleep well in complete darkness, and some need a small source of soft light even at night. For such cases, you can purchase a small night light.

The canopy, so popular today, is not an essential item for a newborn, but rather a decorative element that gives the room additional coziness. It has no practical advantages and, on the contrary, collects dust and can inadvertently fall on a child and harm him.

For walks in the fresh air, you will need a stroller, to which you can additionally purchase a mattress, a mosquito net, a raincoat, and a foot cover.

Additional electronic devices in the form of scales will help monitor weight gain in the first few months of your baby’s life. Those with a large living space will certainly need a radio nanny. With its help, the mother will be able to respond to the baby’s call in time.

Soon a long-awaited baby will appear in your family - this moment both pleases and inspires awe at the same time. You need to carefully prepare for this moment and it is advisable to do this in advance. Where to start preparing and how to choose the right clothes for newborns - what should you buy?

What materials to choose?

The obvious aspect is Children's clothing should be made from natural fabrics. Most often, single-layer children's clothing - rompers, bodysuits, caps - are made of cotton. There are two textile options that are best suited for wearing directly on the body - knitted stitch, interlock.

For the clothes that you will put on your baby over underwear, coarser fabrics are used - flannel, terry, velor. It is important to ensure that synthetic additives are not introduced into the velor - they can be strong allergens and cause allergies in the child.

Both natural materials - sheepskin, wool, and synthetic ones - padding polyester can act as insulation. As you probably guessed, natural materials will provide the baby with better thermal insulation, which means they can be used in low temperatures - below 35 degrees below zero.

How many sets of clothes does a newborn baby need?

It is highly recommended to purchase several sets of clothes in advance, which you will use for the first time after the birth of your baby. After all, you really want to save yourself from the painful “runs” to the shops, when the baby constantly demands your attention.

When making your first purchase, you should proceed from standard sizes - if you are expecting a boy, feel free to buy clothes for a height of 52-56 centimeters, but if for a girl - a little less - 50-54 centimeters.

What clothes should a newborn buy for the first time?

Your baby's very first kit should consist of the following parts:

  1. Some bonnets(no more than three, one warm and a couple of summer ones);
  2. Bodysuit– here, too, you can take several units of different types with a slight difference in size;
  3. Baby undershirts, shirts– It’s worth getting hold of 5-6 undershirts for the first time, pay attention to the buttons – they should not be at the back so as not to cause discomfort to your baby;
  4. Sliders- in the same quantity as vests;
  5. Booties And socks– take 2 pairs of booties and about 10 pairs of socks – babies need to keep their feet warm;
  6. Wool socks– winter option, if you are expecting a baby in the fall or winter;
  7. Warm hat– one is enough, you just need to put it on your cap;
  8. Warm suit for autumn and overalls for the winter with insulation;
  9. Scratches- mittens that will prevent your baby from scratching himself in his sleep - the best option is scratch mittens that are fastened in a shirt.
  10. Diapers- will be needed even if you are not going to swaddle the baby - lay it down or cover it.

Taboo in children's clothing

Under no circumstances should a child's clothing have tight ties., decorative details (bows, buttons and beads that can be torn off and swallowed) and elastic bands that will squeeze the baby’s arms, legs or neck.

It is worth giving up synthetics, especially if your child is allergic. In addition, synthetics will steam your child’s skin in the heat and will not warm you in the cold - so think twice before purchasing a product made of viscose or polyester for your beloved baby. Only synthetic insulation in overalls and synthetic coating in winter suits with thermal insulation are allowed.

Forget also about bright, flashy colors - they will excite the baby. It is better to choose pleasant pastel colors - everything should be soft and light. Bright colors will be appropriate when the baby grows up and turns a year or more.

How to choose shoes for newborns?

Newborns do not need shoes, since the baby is constantly lying down. But here Insulating the feet with socks and booties is a prerequisite for good baby health. Initially, it is better to purchase socks in small quantities, sizes 6-10, and when the baby is born, try on the foot and purchase the most suitable option.

By following these simple recommendations, you can prepare for the birth of your baby and save yourself from running around the shops at first. The main thing is not to buy too many things, because the baby will grow quickly, and you will be left with a mountain of things that have never been used. And you can purchase everything you need in our catalog of goods for babies in the “Clothing for newborns” section.

I would definitely add slips to the list of clothes for a newborn. They can be used both for sleep and during wakefulness. Very convenient. Particularly comfortable for a baby who cannot yet hold his head up are slips with buttons in the front, which go on both sides of the neck and along the legs. You just need to unfasten it completely, put the baby on top and fasten it. Easy, fast and hassle-free! But it’s better not to buy slips or other clothes that go over the head for a newborn. You will suffer yourself and subject your child to bullying.

Alexandra. 10.08.2015 19:57

Yes, I agree with Victoria about the slips. It is most convenient to dress the baby in them. Add them to the list, and it will be perfect. It will be very useful for those who are expecting a baby soon, because before going to the maternity hospital there is usually such a commotion, you are bound to forget something. And here everything is according to the list.

Nastya . 08.10.2015 10:19

And I think the slips are very comfortable. I will say even more, it was the slip that we bought for discharge from the maternity hospital.
In second place on our list of comfortable things is a bodysuit with long and short sleeves.
Third place - romper pants and blouses with buttons.
Caps are definitely needed.

Elena. 05/12/2016 23:44

I agree with the girls about slips - they are convenient and comfortable for small children. From the proposed list, I did not use: caps, vests, rompers. It was more convenient for me to dress children in bodysuits and little men, because nothing would come out, and they were always tucked in. I only used diapers while I was sleeping, I just wrapped my arms. But overall the list is not bad.

Maria. 05/25/2016 09:41

Dear mothers, the baby will appear soon. Tell me, a not yet experienced mother, what clothes does a newborn need for the first time? What is necessary and what can you not spend money on? Do you need a lot of diapers? Or is it better to buy more vests or maybe some suits? There are so many beautiful things now that it makes your eyes wide open. Otherwise I’m afraid I’ll buy everything and half of it will just lie there, we won’t even wear it even once, but we don’t have any extra money. Thanks everyone!

Tatiana . 05/26/2016 18:41

As I understand you. She didn’t know what size clothes to buy for a newborn, or what she needed. But now I can say this: I really needed 20 diapers (three of them were thick, flannel, the rest were calico), several pairs of scratchies, a couple of sets of long-sleeved bodysuits and a pair of short ones. Plus pants with legs, again a couple. Well, I swaddled up to 3 months, so the diaper was the main attribute for me. Over time, it won me over because these ones stretched. I also need undershirts, I wore them under my diaper. I gave birth in the winter, so I wore it underneath. And I bought hats. Not bonnets, but hats, I like them better.

Julia . 05/27/2016 09:57

But for example, I only swaddled for a month, so slips and bodysuits were more useful to me. My son was born in the middle of summer, in the very heat, and I also asked on the Internet what clothes to buy for a newborn in the summer. As a result, we bought several diapers, probably 10 pieces, 1 pack of different colors. A couple of vests. And a bunch of bodysuits and slips. It was hot, so I didn’t change enough diapers; the diapers gave him heat rash, or he was just sweating and they rubbed him. And in the bodysuit he felt good, spacious. And he learned to control his little hands faster, due to the fact that he was not swaddled. A couple of socks and rompers. That was enough for me.

Maria. 05/30/2016 09:13

Thanks for the answers. I picked it all up because I don’t know how long I’ll be swaddling. I also took 15 diapers, 3 rompers, 3 vests and blouses. 2 slips and a bodysuit. I think this will be enough for the first time. Oh, and 2 more pairs of scratches.

When collecting a dowry, every expectant mother will definitely be puzzled by the question: What clothes should I buy for my baby for the first time? I’ll say right away that the list of clothes for newborns is quite decent)
In this article, I decided to collect all my experience on this topic and, I hope, it will be useful for you.
So, let's go)

What are the sizes of children's clothing?

Most often, the size of children's clothing on the tag corresponds to child's growth.
The smallest size is 50, then there are increments of 6 cm (56, 62, 68, etc.).

If you buy clothes from Europe, you may see the following designations on the tags:
0-3 months or 0/3(which corresponds to size 56)
3-6 months or 3/6(this is size 62-68), etc.

The following sizes may be indicated on children's clothing from domestic manufacturers:
18-20 (size 56)
20 (size 62)
22 (size 68), etc.

Sizes of children's hats

The size of hats/bonnets for children is determined By head circumference.

Sizes of children's socks

The size of the socks is determined along the length of the foot in centimeters.
Typically, babies are born with a foot length of 6-8 cm. Sock tags most often contain numbers corresponding to the baby’s foot length, but you can also find the following designations: 0+, 0-3, 3-6.
For newborns, it is better to choose size 0+ (it is approximately 8 cm), but you can take socks for growth - 0-3 (about 10-12 cm).

List of clothes for newborns for the first time

1. Discharge kit

If you want, buy a smart envelope (or blanket), but keep in mind that after you check out, most likely, it will only take up space in your closet. But you can buy something for discharge that will later be useful for walks.
Alice was born in August, it was warm, but not very hot. I bought this set from Daughters and Sons , consisting of a fleece envelope-bag, a fleece blouse, a hat, a vest and rompers.

To go with it, I only bought a cotton cap (under the fleece hat).
The purchase turned out to be extremely successful. We were discharged with this set and then walked for almost 2 months. Also, it later came in handy for Faya, who was born in winter, but, naturally, we put on this set already as an underwear.

There is also a modern option for check-out for the summer-spring - a beautiful plaid or thin knitted blanket (now you can even buy an exclusive, handmade one). A knitted blanket or blanket will definitely come in handy after discharge (for example, covering a child in a stroller or in a car).

Faya was born in December. We bought her a Finnish Kerry envelope, size 62. We checked out in it, but we walked in it all winter and until the end of March, because... The envelope is about 6 cm too big.
Insulation in an envelope 250 g. Designed for temperatures from +5 to -25.
We walked in this envelope at -15 with fleece overalls and did not freeze. We also put it on in above-zero temperatures and never broke a sweat. Lining 100% cotton (velor). There are slots for car seats.
A very convenient envelope - put the child in, fasten 2 zippers and that’s it)
Finnish winter clothes are ideal for kids!

Discharge option for warm spring and summer: a cotton underwear set (vest, romper or, instead, a cotton slip), a diaper, a cap, a thin hat, a thin blanket (a knitted blanket or a light envelope).

Discharge option for autumn, winter: cotton body kit (vest, rompers or, instead, a cotton sleepsuit), fleece overalls, diaper, cap, warm cap, envelope (or blanket).

2. Outerwear for walking

In summer/spring - size 62 overalls.
For the summer - from thin velor, for spring - from fleece with lining (insulation).
The ideal option is with two zippers along the entire length for easy dressing of the baby and turn-ups on the arms and legs.

In winter/autumn - warm winter/autumn overalls or envelope size 62.

3. Hat

If it’s summer, then the thinnest hat, for spring-autumn - a thick knitted one, for winter - a warm one.
It is better to take hats for newborns with ties so that they fit well on the head and do not move out.
For the first time, one or two hats will be enough. If the baby is born in the middle of summer and it is hot, then you will generally walk around in just a cap; a knitted cap will only be needed in case of wind or cold weather.
In winter it is better to have two hats. For example, we had one thin knitted hat for weather down to -5, taking into account the fact that there was also a hood on top. And another warm one with a thick fleece lining for cold weather.

4. Bonnet

For summer - thin cotton caps, spring-autumn-winter - from thick knitwear.
It is better to take 2 sizes at once, for example, buy 2 caps of size 35 and 3 caps of size 40.
We wore the cap for about three months in the following cases:

  • immediately after swimming (but then, about an hour later, we took it off and slept without it, because it was always warm in our house)
  • for a walk (in summer - just a cap, in autumn and winter - under a hat).

5. Diapers

I didn't swaddle either Alice or Faya. I used diapers in the following cases:
- on a changing mat
- sometimes I put it in the crib instead of a sheet
— at first I laid it in a chaise longue
- took me to the clinic
— one diaper hung in the bathroom for a clean wet bottom)

For these purposes, 10 diapers were more than enough for us. Usually thin diapers are used up, but you can also buy a pair of flannel ones. If you plan to swaddle, then, of course, you need to buy more diapers.

6. Anti-scratch mittens– 3 pairs. Choose one with a wide elastic band, these hold up better.

7. Thin socks– 4 pairs (2 pairs small + 2 larger)

8. Warm socks(fleece or terry) – 1 pair

9. Bootie socks - 2 pairs. They fix the baby's feet very well and don't fall off, unlike regular socks. Plus, they look cute on small feet)

10. Long sleeve bodysuit with buttons along the entire length– 3 pcs. (2 pcs. 62 size + 2 pcs. 68 size). If you see a size 62 bodysuit with lockable handles, take them, then you won't have to use anti-scratch guards. If necessary, the “handles” can be unscrewed.

But such bodysuits (without buttons along the entire length) are very inconvenient to put on newborns. These bodysuits will come in handy for babies when they begin to sit up (at about 6 months), because... they can only be put on over the head.

11. Romper with wide elastic band– 5 pcs. (2 pcs. 62 size + 3 pcs. 68 size).

12. Pants (rompers without legs)– 4 pcs. 68 size. It’s also better to take it with a wide elastic band.

13. Slips (overalls with buttons along the entire length)– 5 pcs. (2 pcs. 56 size, 2 pcs. 62 size, 2 pcs. 68 size)

14. Sleeping envelope with buttons– 1 pc. (size 62).

In my experience, the most comfortable clothes for babies up to 3 months are slip. The slip replaces the vest and rompers.
In second place - body (if it's hot) + socks or body + romper (pants)) – if it’s cool.
Sleeping envelope The first month is very comfortable, naturally, only for sleeping. It is convenient because you can quickly and easily unfasten and fasten it at night (to change the diaper).

The tandem vest + rompers is very inconvenient in the sense that the vests constantly move out of the sliders and you have to tuck them in. We wore the vests, God willing, a couple of times to make sure that they were inferior in every way to slips and bodysuits. Also, a constantly moving undershirt and an elastic band from rompers can injure a navel that has not yet healed.

I want to assure you that if you buy enough slips and bodysuits, you simply won’t need undershirts.

1. If the child is expected to be large, buy clothes starting from size 62.

Is it possible to determine the size of children's clothing in advance? Some children are born small, weighing around 3 kg. and 47-50 cm tall, while others are very large - more than 4 kg. and height 54 cm.
You can only determine for sure what size clothing will suit your baby after he is born.
But still, even at the stage of pregnancy, the growth of the child can be monitored by ultrasound. A competent doctor will always tell you if the child is large or, conversely, very small in size.
At the ultrasound with both daughters, I was told that they would be small and, most likely, would be born around 3 kg.
The doctors turned out to be right - Alice was born weighing 2850 kg. with a height of 50 cm, Faya - 3050 kg. and height 49 cm.
I bought quite a lot of clothes in size 56, but it was enough for us only for the first month and a half, then everything became small. Moreover, at the same time we wore some clothes in size 62, and they were just right for us.

2. If you plan to buy clothes in size 56, then take it to the minimum, because if you buy a lot, you risk not wearing even half of it - clothes of this size become small very quickly.

3. When buying clothes, consider the season (winter, spring, summer or autumn), as well as the air temperature in the apartment. If it’s cool at home, then buy bodysuits and slips with long sleeves and give preference to clothes made of thicker material.

4. There should be enough clothes– not a lot (because the child grows very quickly in the first months), but not a little. Usually, newborns do not get dirty, but I had a problem with both daughters for the first 3 months - therefore, it happened that during the day I had to change clothes, and even more than once.

5. Jumpsuits (slips) usually fit true to size, but it’s better to buy a bodysuit one size up, or even two larger. I bought several bodysuits in size 56, and we just didn’t have time to wear them, not even a month had passed before they became too small for us. But the size 62 bodysuit was just right. And all because the length of the bodysuit “eats” the diaper.

6. If you plan to buy/order several types of clothing from any brand, first read reviews about the brand and manufacturer so as not to make a mistake with the size. Not all clothing brands fit true to size; some brands run large, while others, on the contrary, run small.

How to organize care for a newborn

Closer and closer is that happy moment when you press your little miracle to your chest. Everything is ready for his birth: the contract with the maternity hospital has been signed, the crib and stroller have been purchased, the name has been chosen. But what should you dress your baby in in the first days and weeks of his life? What size clothes for newborns should I choose?

A lot has been written about this - both in books and on the Internet. Perhaps you have already been given advice by more experienced friends and sisters. But, as practice shows, advice is of little use, and the question of choosing children's clothing remains open. Let's try to make it clearer.

Features of clothing sizes for newborns

It is possible to determine for sure which size will suit the baby only after his birth. During pregnancy, you can approximately monitor the growth of your baby through ultrasound, but no device will tell you the exact height and weight of the baby.

Most often, children at birth are 48-53 cm tall. At the same time, boys are born slightly larger than girls, and this should also be taken into account.

Clothes for newborns are selected according to the baby's height.

Basic sizes designed for newborns:

  • 50 – it is designed for premature or very young babies and, as a rule, is not suitable for average babies born at 39-42 weeks. Even if your baby’s height at birth was 50 cm, then you should buy the next size.
  • 56 – such clothes are suitable for a newborn (50-53 cm) and will last him during the first month of his life.
  • 62 - usually babies grow to this size by the second month, but especially large babies can wear it immediately after birth.

Types of dimensional grids

The above is the most popular sizing system for children's clothing in Russia, but if you order clothes from abroad, you may encounter a system by month:

  • 0-3 months – designed for children 50-56 cm;
  • 3-6 months is not a very comfortable clothing size for newborns, corresponds to Russian 62 and 68;
  • 6-9 months;
  • 9-12 months.

Also in Europe there is the following designation:

  • 0/3 – respectively, 0-3 months;
  • 3/6 - 3-6 months, etc.;
  • 9/12.

This system is rarely used in Russia. More often from domestic manufacturers you can find the following sizes:

  • 18 – for newborns;
  • 18-20 – for monthly or very large children;
  • 20-22, etc.

Below is a summary table indicating not only the size designations on the labels, but also data on height, abdominal circumference and other parameters of the baby that fits a particular size.

Age Chest (cm) Abdominal girth (cm) Height (cm) Russian size Standard size European size
0 - 1 month 38-40 42 51-56 50-56 18 0/3
1 - 2 months 41-43 42-44 56-62 56-62 18-20
2 - 3 months 40-42 43-45 62 20
3 – 6 months 42-44 45-48 62-66 68 22 3/6
6 - 9 months 48 48-51 66-74 74 24 3/9
9 – 12 months 50 51-53 74-80 80 28 S

The table shows sizes for children up to one year old. Thus, the following conclusions can be drawn.

  1. For newborn babies, clothing sizes 56, 18 or 0/3 are best.
  2. For premature babies weighing 1-2 kg, the 50th Russian one is suitable.
  3. For very large babies weighing more than 4 kg, it is worth buying size 62 newborn clothes (or 20).

Baby hat size

A hat is a must-have attribute of a child's wardrobe. A cap, a thin fleece hat for cool weather or a warm down one - one way or another, a baby needs a hat both in summer and winter.

The size of a hat for children is determined by the circumference of the head. The table shows approximate parameters:

Age Head circumference (cm) Size
0 - 1 month 33-35 35
1 - 2 months 35-40
2 - 3 months 40
3 – 6 months 42-44 44
6 - 9 months 44-46 46
9 – 12 months 47

Therefore, it is better for a newborn to buy caps and thin hats of size 35, and thick winter hats can be bought larger - 40.

Sock and shoe sizes

Newborns don’t need shoes; warm socks are enough for them. The first shoes will be needed when the baby tries to stand on his own feet, that is, no earlier than 6 months.

You can choose socks based on the length of your baby’s feet. Usually this is about 8 cm, but sometimes it is better to buy socks a little larger, otherwise the baby will constantly throw this piece of clothing off his feet.

Sometimes the socks have the following designations: 0+, 0-3, 3-6. For newborns, it is better to choose size 0+ (it is approximately 8 cm), but you can take socks for growth - 0-3 (about 10-12 cm).

For premature babies, some manufacturers offer socks 6 cm long, but it is quite difficult to find them on sale.

Features of choosing clothes for newborns

When you go shopping, be prepared that you will want to buy half of the things you like at once. Don’t give in to emotions, otherwise you will later rack your brains over what to do with a bunch of unnecessary and uncomfortable, but completely new children’s clothes.

Please adhere to the following rules.

  1. It is advisable to buy clothes for a newborn, sewn with the seams facing out. Such models do not harm the delicate skin of children.
  2. Avoid lightning! Better buy things with buttons.
  3. Choose things only from natural fabrics (cotton, linen).
  4. You should not buy warm clothes in the same size as everything else. It is better to buy overalls 1-2 sizes larger.
  5. Print and take the size chart for newborns with you to the store.
  6. Please remember that clothing with the same markings may differ significantly from each other. If size 56 of newborn clothes from one manufacturer is just right for your baby, then it is not a fact that clothes from another manufacturer of the same size will suit him. For example, items from GAP and Zvezdochka run small, and the British brand NEXT produces items slightly larger than indicated on the label.
  7. Don't buy a lot of clothes at once. First, test 1-2 things and decide what is more convenient for you (type of fastener, style, brand, model).

When should you buy clothes for your baby?

You will have plenty of time to do baby shopping. But when is the best time to do this? Immediately after the second planned ultrasound, when the sex of the baby becomes known, you should not run to the store, but you also do not need to delay the trip until 40-41 weeks. After the maternity hospital, you will not have time to go shopping, and you will most likely be with your baby for 2-3 weeks.

Of course, the baby’s father or grandmother can buy children’s clothes, but don’t you want to walk between the shelves yourself and choose the most beautiful “dowry” for the baby?

In general, you can buy clothes at any time. It is better to do this after the third ultrasound, as this will show how big your baby will be. But ultrasound will not give an exact guarantee, so do not buy clothes of size 50, and buy size 56 at a minimum.

If you are one of the superstitious mothers who are afraid to buy baby things before giving birth, then try to calm down. If this doesn’t bother you, you can shift worries about the dowry onto the shoulders of your husband or mother. Or put an icon of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in the room, ask him for help and go to the store yourself. Most likely, all your superstitious fears will be in vain.

How many clothes and what size does a newborn need?

Don't try to buy the entire store at once. Remember that the baby grows very quickly, and it may turn out that you will wear some things no more than a couple of times. In addition, your relatives will probably shower you and your newborn miracle with new clothes.

For the first time, the following set will be enough for you:

  • overalls (“men”, slips) – 4-5 pieces;
  • bodysuit – 3 pieces;
  • pants - 2 pieces;
  • socks – 2-3 pairs;
  • caps – 1-2 pieces;
  • anti-scratch mittens - 2 pairs;
  • warm blouse or insulated overalls – 1 piece.

For winter children it is worth purchasing:

  • warm overalls for walking – 1 piece;
  • warm hat – 1 piece;
  • warm wool socks – 1 pair.

Autumn-spring babies will need:

  • demi-season overalls – 1 piece;
  • hat – 1 piece.

As you can see, not so much. And don’t try to buy all things in a minimum size of 56. A child may not fit into some of them. It is better to buy half of the things in size 56, and half in size 62. In this case, even if 62 turns out to be too big for your child, these things can be left for growth.

Conclusion

Despite the fact that modern manufacturers have filled the shelves of children's stores with all sorts of things, it is very difficult to make the perfect choice. You should have a size chart for clothes for newborns with you when you go shopping for children, but it won’t always be able to help.

Try it! Buy things from different manufacturers and companies and see what size suits your baby and what he is most comfortable in.
