The main character of the story, the boy Vasya, lives with his father in a big house. His father is a famous judge. They live richly, without knowing the need for anything. Vasya is surrounded by nannies, shoes and clothes, he always has food.

One day he meets his homeless brother and sister – Valek and Marusya. They live in the dungeon of a dilapidated chapel. So he gets acquainted with the other side of life, not well-fed and cloudless, but poor and hungry... At first he cannot understand how it is that he does not have his own home or has no food, and he has to steal it. Having learned such truth, he cannot even sleep and cries at night.

In addition, Marusya turns out to be a seriously ill girl, and then Vasya shows his good qualities, beginning to take care of her to the best of his ability. He plays with her, tries to make her smile, and he is always pleased when he succeeds. When she gets really bad, he decides to take a desperate step. He begs his younger sister Sonya for her favorite doll. This is not an ordinary doll - an expensive gift from their deceased mother, a very beautiful and large doll. Knowing that her father and nannies will be against it, he secretly takes her out of the house. Marusya was very happy with the doll, she immediately fell in love with it. For the first time in a long time, she began to get out of bed and laugh. She never parted with this doll for a moment, she even slept with it.

Vasya was very glad that he had done this act, despite the big problems with his father, he was not upset that he had done such a good thing. After Marusya’s death, the truth came out and his father forgave Vasya everything and even respected him.

So, that poor girl was completely weak and sick. And she had no toys at all. Vasya decided to do something for the poor thing. And he had to take his sister's doll. Well, stealing is temporary. The sick girl was delighted to have such a beautiful toy and smiled. She even felt a little better. But it didn’t save her... At least it brightened up the last minutes.

And Vasya was accused of theft. His father was ready to punish him seriously. And then that same “bandit” came to visit them. He returned the doll and thanked Vasya. That is, all the talk was in vain. Vasya turned out to be a very kind and fair boy. I think that his father at that moment felt ashamed of his behavior. Their relationship should improve!

Everything can lead to good things. I saw on TV how one boy played computer games, everyone scolded him for it. And he grew up and won a cup in these very games. Won a lot of money. The main character of the story, Vasya, was left without a mother at the age of six, and his relationship with his father was very difficult: the parent was harsh and indifferent towards his son, thinking that the boy did not understand him and did not share his grief for his mother. Vasya, looking at his constantly gloomy father, could not “feel a kindred soul in him,” he was scared and timid. Therefore, the boy began to often run away from home, walk the streets, they began to call him “a tramp, a worthless boy,” and reproach him “for various bad inclinations,” so that both Vasya and his father believed in it.

During one of these walks, Vasya met people who were called “bad society” in Knyazhye-Veno, precisely in this small provincial town where the events described took place. These were thieves, tramps, homeless people begging on the streets. But they opened Vasya’s eyes to things that he had not noticed before. All these people, despite their dubious past and present, poverty, and not the most correct way of life, were able to change his view of the world around him and showed real life as it is. The boy learned how people live below the poverty line, and for the first time thought about “adult” problems. He saw “the features of severe tragedy, deep grief and need,” realized how cruel and complex the world is, learned patience, and felt needed.

New friends Valek and Marusya awakened kindness and compassion in Vasya’s soul. With them I experienced both joys and sorrows, learned mutual assistance and support. Comparing his sister Sonya with Marusya, the boy began to understand how happily and carefree his sister lives and how hopeless the life of his little girlfriend is. Vasya felt what an abyss lies between the circle to which he himself belongs and the “bad society,” and most importantly, the injustice of what is happening in the world.

In new circumstances, the truth was revealed to Vasya, he looked at his father from the other side and understood him.
